What a counselling psychologist does — and what she does not
A counselling psychologist is trained to help people understand and change patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving through structured conversation and evidence-based techniques. The work is collaborative: you bring the problem and your knowledge of your own life; the psychologist brings training in how difficulties develop and what tends to help. Counselling psychology sits closest to everyday life — relationships, work, family, self-worth, decisions — and to the emotional problems that grow out of it.
Three roles are often confused, so it is worth being precise. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose psychiatric conditions and prescribe medication. A clinical psychologist in India holds an M.Phil. or Psy.D. in clinical psychology and is registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI); clinical psychologists carry out formal psychological assessment and treat diagnosed mental illness. Taanya is a counselling psychologist with a Master's degree — not an RCI-registered clinical psychologist and not a doctor. She does not diagnose psychiatric disorders, conduct psychometric testing or prescribe medication, and she will say so plainly if that is what you need.
What she does offer is talking therapy for the wide middle ground of human difficulty: the anxiety, low mood, relationship conflict, grief, stress and loss of confidence that most people experience at some point and that respond well to counselling. Where a client is already under a psychiatrist's care, counselling runs alongside the medical treatment rather than replacing it.

What Taanya works with
Alongside conventional counselling and CBT-based methods, Taanya draws on clinical hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, EFT tapping, Integral Eye Movement Therapy and, for clients who want them, Reiki and other energy-based practices. These are offered as options, never as substitutes for counselling or for medical care, and you choose which to use.
- «Anxiety, worry, panic attacks and health anxiety
- «Low mood, loss of motivation and depressive episodes, alongside medical care where needed
- «Relationship and marriage difficulties, pre-marital counselling and separation
- «Family conflict, in-law stress and parenting concerns
- «Grief, bereavement and adjustment after major life changes
- «Stress, burnout and anger that is affecting work or home
- «Low self-esteem, self-criticism and confidence
- «Trauma from childhood or adulthood, approached at a pace you control
- «Habits and patterns you want to change, using hypnotherapy, NLP or EFT alongside counselling

How sessions run
The first session lasts about an hour and is mostly listening. Taanya asks what has brought you now, how long it has been going on, what you have already tried, whether you are seeing a doctor or taking any medication, and what you would like to be different. By the end she will share how she understands the problem and propose a way of working, including which approaches she thinks suit you and roughly how many sessions it may take.
Sessions after that are usually weekly or fortnightly at first, then spaced out as things improve. A typical session reviews the week, works on one specific issue using the agreed method, and ends with something practical to try before the next meeting. For a focused concern such as a phobia or a single decision, four to six sessions is common; for long-standing patterns, relationship work or grief, the work generally runs longer, and you can pause or stop at any point.
Sessions are held in person at Anand Niketan in South Delhi or over video call. Online clients follow exactly the same process, and Taanya has worked this way with people in Dubai, the UK, Australia, the US and Canada as well as across India.

Confidentiality
What you say in a session stays between you and Taanya. Nothing is shared with family members, employers or anyone else without your written consent. The only exceptions are the ones every psychologist works under: a serious risk of harm to you or to someone else, or a legal requirement to disclose. These limits are explained at the first appointment so there are no surprises.

Working with children and teenagers
Taanya works with teenagers and their parents on exam pressure, low confidence, social anxiety, friendship and family conflict, screen and phone habits, and the low mood that often follows academic setbacks. Younger children are usually seen together with a parent, and much of the work with a young child is parent-focused: helping you respond to the behaviour in a way that settles it rather than escalates it.
She does not carry out developmental or psycho-educational assessment. If the picture suggests ADHD, autism, a learning difficulty or another condition that needs formal testing, she will say so early and point you to an RCI-registered clinical psychologist, a developmental paediatrician or a child psychiatrist, and can continue supportive work with the family alongside that assessment.
A marked drop in school performance, persistent worry or tearfulness, withdrawal from friends, frequent angry outbursts, trouble sleeping or recurring nightmares, being bullied or bullying others, self-harm, or talk of not wanting to be here. Any mention of self-harm or suicide should be taken seriously the same day — see a doctor or contact a helpline — and counselling can follow once the immediate risk has been addressed.

When Taanya refers on
Part of a counselling psychologist's job is knowing the limits of counselling. Taanya will recommend a psychiatrist or GP when there are signs of severe depression, psychosis, bipolar disorder, an eating disorder with physical risk, or when someone is not sleeping or eating enough to be safe. She will refer to an RCI-registered clinical psychologist when a formal diagnosis or assessment is needed, and to a medical specialist when physical symptoms have not been checked. In those cases she often continues to see the client for counselling in parallel, with the client's agreement and, where useful, in contact with the treating doctor.
Taanya Nagi has practised counselling and holistic therapy since 2006, first in Australia and, since her return, in New Delhi. She holds an MA in Counselling Psychology, is a certified clinical hypnotherapist, Reiki Master and NLP practitioner, and trained in EFT and IEMT. She works alone, which means the person you speak to on the phone, the person who listens in the first session and the person you continue with are all the same.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
What is the difference between a counselling psychologist and a clinical psychologist?+
In India a clinical psychologist has completed an M.Phil. or Psy.D. in clinical psychology and is registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India; clinical psychologists assess and treat diagnosed mental illness. A counselling psychologist holds a Master's degree in counselling psychology and works with emotional, relational and life difficulties through talking therapy. Taanya is a counselling psychologist and is not RCI-registered as a clinical psychologist; she refers on when assessment or a diagnosis is needed.
What services do counselling psychologists offer?+
Individual counselling, couples and family sessions, and — in Taanya's case — hypnotherapy, NLP, EFT and IEMT for clients who want a more structured method for a specific habit, fear or pattern. Sessions are available in person in South Delhi and online.
What is the difference between counselling and therapy?+
In everyday use the words overlap. Counselling usually means shorter, more focused work on a current problem; psychotherapy tends to be longer and looks at deeper patterns. Taanya offers both, and the first session is where you decide together which fits.
What is the difference between counselling and coaching?+
Counselling deals with distress — anxiety, grief, conflict, low mood — and with understanding why it is there. Coaching assumes you are basically well and want to move forward on specific goals. Taanya offers coaching separately; if coaching sessions reveal something that counselling should address, she will say so.
