“Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi is a counselling psychologist by training — an MA in Counselling Psychology, a Diploma in Holistic Healing and Counselling from the Holistic Living Training Institute in Melbourne, certified membership of the Australian Holistic Healers and Counsellors Association (AHHCA), and certification as a Clinical Hypnotherapist — with more than twenty-five years of counselling and healing practice, thirteen of them living and working in Australia. She works online with people in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi from her practice in New Delhi, in the evening hours that suit the Gulf.”
She grew up in India, has worked with Indians abroad for most of her career, and still travels to Dubai to train and run workshops. For clients in the UAE that means confidential counselling and hypnotherapy in English, Hindi or Punjabi, only ninety minutes of time difference, and someone who already understands a joint family, an arranged marriage under strain, or the expectation that the eldest son sends money home whatever it costs him — without any of it needing to be explained first.

Why people in Dubai choose to talk to someone in India
Cost is part of it: licensed psychologists in Dubai price for an insured market, and many Indian expats on mid-range packages have no mental health cover. Privacy is a larger part: Dubai behaves like a small town, and people worry about being seen in a waiting room by a colleague or a neighbour from the same building.
The third reason is harder to name. People want to speak to someone who already understands a father who will not discuss his health on the phone, a marriage that is being held together across two countries, or the particular guilt of being the one who left. With Taanya, that context is the starting point rather than something to be taught.

Training and credentials
Taanya's counselling training is Australian. Her Diploma in Holistic Healing and Counselling from HLTI Melbourne is Australian accredited and qualifies her for certified membership of AHHCA, and her Anger and Stress Management certification is from the Australian Institute of Management. She holds a BA (Hons) in Behavioural Sciences and an MA in Counselling Psychology, awarded in first division, and is a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (C.H.I.I), a certified NLP practitioner and Level 1 NLP Life Coach, a certified IEMT practitioner, and a Reiki Master and teacher in the Usui lineage, with further certificates in pre-marital and marriage counselling, inner child healing and Bach Flower Remedies from the Bach Centre in the UK.
She lived in Australia for thirteen years before returning to India, and continues to visit Australia and Dubai for ongoing training and workshops. She works alone, and every session is with her.

What a counselling psychologist does
Counselling psychology is concerned with how people cope with life, relationships and change, through talking and structured techniques such as cognitive behavioural work. It is different from psychiatry, a medical speciality that diagnoses and prescribes, and from clinical psychology, which assesses and treats diagnosed mental illness. A counselling session will not end with a prescription, a diagnosis or a medical report; what it offers is a steady place to make sense of what you are carrying, work through it, and build ways of coping that hold.

What people in the UAE bring to counselling
The themes are consistent. Work anxiety that never switches off, because the job holds the visa and the visa holds everything else. Marriages strained by long hours, by one partner stuck on a dependent visa with no work and no friends, or by living apart while a spouse stays in India with the children. Low mood in people who are outwardly doing well. Grief for a parent who died in India while they were waiting for a flight. And, among people a decade into Gulf life, a sense of not quite belonging anywhere.
- «Anxiety, panic and constant worry about work, money or status
- «Persistent low mood, loss of motivation and feeling numb
- «Couple and marriage difficulties, including long-distance and dependent-visa strain
- «Anger and irritability that is damaging relationships at home
- «Grief, especially where distance made the loss harder to face
- «Confidence, self-worth and the effects of a critical upbringing
- «Deciding whether to stay in the Gulf or return to India, and the family conflict around it

How the online arrangement works from Dubai
Dubai is an hour and a half behind Delhi, so an 8 pm session in Dubai starts at 9.30 pm in India, within Taanya's evening hours. Sessions are on video, or WhatsApp voice if you prefer not to be on camera. First contact is by WhatsApp on +91-9999344415, where you can ask questions before committing to anything.
Privacy at your end is the main thing to plan for. Clients use a closed bedroom, a parked car or a walk along a quiet stretch of the creek, with headphones. If the connection drops, the session continues on a phone call and the lost time is made up.

What the first session looks like
You talk; Taanya listens and asks. The aim of the first hour is to understand what is happening, what led up to it, what you have tried, and what you want to be different. Expect questions about work and visa, who is with you in Dubai and who is in India, and any medical care you already receive. If you are on medication, it stays on; nothing here involves changing what a doctor has prescribed.
You will not be handed a label or a fixed programme. You will get an honest view of whether counselling seems the right fit and what it would focus on. The number of sessions is decided as you go, not sold up front.

Methods used
Counselling here is integrative. Depending on what you bring it may include cognitive and behavioural techniques for anxiety; work on relationship and family patterns; clinical hypnotherapy for habits, fears and sleep; EFT tapping and IEMT for specific memories; and, for those who want it, Reiki or guided meditation at a distance. Methods are explained before use, and plain talking therapy is entirely fine.

Who this is for
Adults in the UAE who want confidential talking therapy in English, Hindi or Punjabi from a counsellor who understands Indian family life, for stress, anxiety, low mood, relationship problems, anger or grief — and who would rather work with someone trained and certified in Australia, with twenty-five years behind her, than be assigned whoever has a slot free at a clinic on Sheikh Zayed Road.

How this works
Sessions are held online from the practice at D-96 Anand Niketan, New Delhi. There are no premises in the Emirates, and if you visit India you are welcome to book in person. In the UAE the words psychologist and psychology are protected titles requiring a licence from the Dubai Health Authority, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi or the Ministry of Health and Prevention. Taanya holds none of these; "counselling psychologist" describes her MA and her training, and to UAE clients she practises from India as a counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist rather than as a UAE-licensed psychologist.
She does not diagnose or prescribe medication. If a UAE doctor has said you need psychiatric assessment, medication review or clinical treatment, follow that advice and see a licensed provider there; counselling from Delhi can run alongside that care with your doctor's knowledge, but it cannot replace it. Look for a UAE-licensed psychologist or psychiatrist instead if you need a diagnosis, medication, an assessment for a school, employer, court or immigration process, insurance-covered treatment, or care for a serious mental illness.
Fees are paid directly and confirmed when you enquire; UAE insurers reimburse providers on their local network, so sessions cannot be claimed. This is not a crisis service and sessions are scheduled, not on demand. If you are having thoughts of ending your life or are in immediate danger, do not wait for an online appointment: call 999 or 998, or go to the nearest emergency department. The Ministry of Health and Prevention mental health support line, 800-HOPE (800 4673), is available around the clock.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
Can you call yourself a psychologist in Dubai?+
Taanya holds an MA in Counselling Psychology, but the title is regulated in the UAE and requires a local licence she does not hold, so to UAE clients she describes herself as a counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist practising from India — see How this works above.
How do time zones work between Dubai and Delhi?+
India is ninety minutes ahead of the UAE. A 7 pm Dubai session is 8.30 pm in Delhi. Evening and weekend slots that suit the Gulf are easy to arrange, and neither country uses daylight saving.
Is what I say confidential?+
Yes. Sessions are not recorded and nothing is shared with a spouse, parent, employer or anyone else. The one exception, explained at the outset, is an immediate and serious risk to your life or someone else's.
Can sessions be in Hindi or Punjabi?+
Yes. English, Hindi or Punjabi, whichever you think in, and switching between them mid-session is normal.
Can my partner join for couples counselling from Dubai?+
Yes. Couples sessions are held on video with both of you on the call, whether you are in the same room in Dubai or one of you is in India. Where a marriage is strained by living apart, that split arrangement often works well.
