IEMT Therapy in South Delhi

Integral Eye Movement Therapy — a brief, gentle method using guided eye movement patterns to release the emotional charge of old experiences.

What is IEMT?

IEMT — Integral Eye Movement Therapy — was developed by UK practitioner Andrew T. Austin and draws on earlier work in NLP and eye-movement based therapies. In a session, the practitioner guides your eyes through specific patterns of movement while you hold a particular feeling, memory or self-belief in mind. These eye movements appear to help the brain “update” how it stores the experience, so the old emotional charge naturally softens.

IEMT is particularly known for working with two core questions: “Why is this person still feeling X?” and “Why is this person still behaving as if they are Y?” It is often used for unresolved anger, grief, anxiety, shame, and for shifting long-standing identities such as “I am a worrier” or “I am not enough”.

One of the biggest advantages of IEMT is that it is largely content-free. You don’t have to share every detail or retell the whole story — a real relief for anyone who has felt re-traumatised by talking through painful events. Most people notice clear shifts within one to a few sessions.

Benefits of IEMT

Brief & Solution-Focused

Most issues can be worked on in just a handful of sessions, not months.

Resolves Stuck Emotions

Gently reduces the emotional charge behind recurring anger, guilt, shame or fear.

Shifts Unhelpful Identities

Loosens old self-statements like “I’m anxious” or “I’m not good enough”.

Works for Trauma Imprints

Supports people working through the lingering effects of difficult life events.

Complements Other Therapies

Pairs well with counselling, hypnotherapy and coaching for faster progress.

What IEMT Is and Where It Comes From

Integral Eye Movement Therapy was developed by Andrew T. Austin, a former neurology nurse and NLP trainer in the United Kingdom, in the mid-2000s. Austin built on the Eye Movement Integration work of Steve and Connirae Andreas from the late 1980s, which itself came out of the observation in NLP that people move their eyes in consistent directions when they access memories, feelings and inner talk. IEMT organised those observations into a structured method with its own model of how problems persist.

IEMT is not EMDR, though people often confuse the two. EMDR, developed by Francine Shapiro, is a recognised trauma treatment with a large research base and a set eight-phase protocol. IEMT is a shorter, practitioner-developed approach that works with what Austin calls kinaesthetic imprints, the first time a feeling was learned, and identity imprints, the point at which a person began to say ’I am’ something. It is also known for its Patterns of Chronicity, a list of the habits that keep people stuck, such as constantly testing the therapist or answering every suggestion with a ’yes, but’.

The research on IEMT is limited to case reports and small practitioner studies, so it should be described as a promising brief approach rather than an evidence-based treatment. Taanya trained in IEMT alongside her counselling psychology and clinical hypnotherapy work, and uses it where it fits, not as a standalone answer.

What an IEMT Session Looks Like

Sessions run for roughly sixty to ninety minutes. IEMT works well in person at the South Delhi practice and also online, since only your eyes and the practitioner’s hand or a point on the screen are needed.

1

Mapping the feeling

You describe the emotion or self-statement you want to work on, without needing to tell the whole story. Taanya asks a few precise questions about where and when it shows up.

2

Rating the charge

You rate how strong the feeling is right now on a simple 0 to 10 scale. This gives a before-and-after marker that does not depend on guesswork.

3

Holding the feeling

You bring the feeling, or the earliest memory of it, to mind and hold it lightly. You do not need to speak about the content unless you want to.

4

Guided eye movements

While you hold the feeling, Taanya guides your eyes through specific patterns. Each pattern takes a few seconds and is repeated as needed.

5

Checking and re-rating

You pause, notice what has changed and rate the feeling again. Often it drops or becomes harder to find. If not, the pattern is adjusted.

6

Identity work and close

If a stuck ’I am’ statement is part of the picture, the same process is applied to it. The session closes with grounding and a plan for follow-up.

Who IEMT May Help, and Who It Is Not For

It may suit you if

  • You keep feeling the same anger, guilt, shame or dread in situations that no longer warrant it.
  • You would rather not retell a painful event in detail, or talking about it has not helped.
  • You carry an old label about yourself such as ’I am the anxious one’ or ’I always fail’ and want to loosen it.
  • You want brief, focused work that fits alongside the counselling you already do.
  • You have a specific trigger, such as a person, a place or a type of conversation, that reliably sets you off.

It is not suitable if

  • You are experiencing psychosis, mania, severe dissociation or are in acute crisis. Please contact a psychiatrist or call Tele-MANAS on 14416.
  • You have an eye condition, vertigo, recent concussion or seizures that make rapid eye movement unwise. Tell Taanya before booking.
  • You have a diagnosis of PTSD and want a structured trauma treatment. In that case a recognised approach such as trauma-focused CBT or EMDR from a suitably qualified clinician comes first, and IEMT may support it later.
  • You are hoping for a single session that removes the need for any other support. IEMT can shift a feeling, but the circumstances around it still need attention.

IEMT is one tool in Taanya’s counselling practice. Where it is not the right fit she will say so and suggest what is.

How Taanya Combines IEMT with Counselling and Hypnotherapy

A typical piece of work starts with counselling. Talking helps to understand what the recurring feeling is protecting you from, what it costs you and what you want instead. When a feeling is clear but stubborn, unmoved by insight, that is the moment Taanya may bring in IEMT for part of a session. The eye-movement work reduces the emotional charge; the counselling then makes use of the space that opens up.

IEMT and clinical hypnotherapy also complement each other. Hypnotherapy is good at building new responses, rehearsing a calm version of a feared situation or strengthening a more helpful identity. IEMT is good at reducing the old response first, so that the new one has room to take hold. For people who find NLP techniques useful, IEMT sits naturally in the same family and uses a similar language of submodalities and anchors.

IEMT: Questions People Ask

Is IEMT the same as EMDR?

No. Both use eye movements, but EMDR is a recognised, well-researched trauma treatment with a defined protocol. IEMT is a shorter, practitioner-developed method with a smaller evidence base. Taanya offers IEMT as a brief complementary technique within counselling, not as a replacement for EMDR where EMDR is indicated.

Do I have to talk about what happened?

Not in detail. IEMT is largely content-free, which means you can hold a memory or feeling privately while the eye movements are guided. You can share as much or as little as you like.

How many IEMT sessions are usually needed?

For a single clear feeling, one to three sessions is common. Long-standing identity patterns tend to take longer and are usually worked on within ongoing counselling rather than as a stand-alone course.

Does IEMT work online?

Yes. Online sessions use a point on the screen or the practitioner's hand on camera to guide the eye movements. A stable connection, a quiet room and a screen at eye level are all that is needed.

What might I feel afterwards?

Some people feel lighter or tired, and occasionally a little emotional for a day or two as things settle. This is normal. If anything feels overwhelming you can message Taanya, and if you ever feel unsafe, call Tele-MANAS on 14416.

An honest note on expectations

IEMT is a complementary technique with a limited research base. It does not cure, treat or diagnose any mental health condition, and it is not a substitute for psychiatric care, medication or a recognised trauma treatment where one is needed. Taanya will always tell you when something outside her practice is the right next step.

If you are in crisis, feel unsafe or are having thoughts of harming yourself, please do not wait for a session. Call Tele-MANAS on 14416, a free 24-hour helpline run by the Government of India, or go to the nearest emergency department.
