Treatment & Support

Grey-Area Drinking
There is a wide territory between social drinking and dependence, and most people live in it. You function, you hold a job, nobody has staged an intervention — and you think about drinking more than you would like anyone to know.
- «Drinking more on most evenings than you intended to
- «Needing it to unwind, and finding that nothing else works
- «Counting drinks in company so nobody notices the total
- «Regularly deciding to have a dry week and not managing it
- «Fuzzy memories of the end of evenings
- «Rising tolerance — the same effect now takes noticeably more
- «Defensiveness when anyone mentions it, including yourself

What Counselling Works On
Drinking is usually solving something: anxiety, boredom, grief, social discomfort, or the absence of any other way to stop being at work in your head. Removing the drink without addressing the function rarely holds.
- «Identifying what the alcohol is doing for you, honestly and without judgement
- «Working on the underlying anxiety, low mood or unprocessed loss
- «Practical strategies for the specific situations where it is hardest
- «Managing the social pressure to drink, which in Delhi can be considerable
- «Deciding on a realistic goal — reduction or abstinence — rather than having one imposed
- «Hypnotherapy and EFT alongside counselling, where they help with the urge itself

What a First Session Involves
An honest picture, without a lecture. How much, how often, when it started changing, what it does for you, and what has already been tried. You will not be asked to accept a label, and you will not be told you must stop before you can be helped — for many people the goal at the outset is reduction and clarity rather than abstinence.
What you will get is a straight assessment of where you actually are, which is often the thing people have been avoiding.

The Cultural Layer in Delhi
Drinking here carries a set of specific complications. It is often central to professional life, so reducing it has career visibility. In many families it is either entirely hidden or entirely normalised, with little middle ground. Women who drink face considerably heavier judgement, which delays help-seeking further. And the household frequently contains someone whose own drinking is not discussed at all.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
Do I have to call myself an alcoholic?+
No. Labels help some people and stop others from ever walking through the door. What matters is whether your drinking is costing you something, which you are the one qualified to judge.
Do I have to stop completely?+
Not necessarily. For some people reduction is a realistic and sustainable goal. For others, particularly where dependence has developed, abstinence is more workable. That is discussed openly rather than decided for you.
Is this the same as AA?+
No. AA is a peer fellowship with a particular framework and it helps a great many people. This is individual, confidential counselling with no required beliefs or steps. They combine perfectly well.
Is it confidential from my family and employer?+
Entirely. Nothing is disclosed to anyone.
Do I have to stop drinking completely?+
Not necessarily, and insisting on it as a precondition stops many people seeking help at all. For some, abstinence is the right goal; for others, reduction and understanding come first. Where dependence is physical, that changes the picture and medical advice is needed.
Will my family have to know?+
No. Sessions are confidential. Many clients attend for a long period without telling anyone, though family involvement is often valuable later if you choose it.
