Understanding Your Healing Journey

What Guided Meditation Involves

You sit or lie down comfortably, eyes closed, and are talked through the session. The voice gives your attention somewhere to go — the breath, the body, an image, a sequence — so the mind has a track to run on rather than a void to fill.

You are awake and in control throughout. You can stop at any point, open your eyes, ask a question or say something is not working. Nothing about it requires belief in anything in particular.

Sessions typically run 30 to 45 minutes. What is used varies with what you need on the day.

  • «Breath and body-scan work, for people who are wound tight and need the nervous system to come down first
  • «Grounding and centring practices, for anxiety, overwhelm and racing thought
  • «Creative visualisation, where you build and inhabit an imagined scene in detail
  • «Imagery for healing and recovery, used alongside — not instead of — medical care
  • «Meditations for sleep, for people whose problem is the twenty minutes after the light goes out
  • «Loving-kindness and self-compassion practice, which is often the hardest one and often the one that changes the most

Creative Visualisation

Visualisation is the more active half of the work. Rather than watching thoughts pass, you deliberately construct a scene and occupy it — with detail, and crucially with feeling.

The feeling part is where most self-taught attempts fall down. People picture the outcome accurately and stay emotionally outside it, watching themselves from across the room. Visualisation that does anything requires you to be inside it — to feel what it would actually be like, not to observe a photograph of it.

It is used for rehearsing difficult situations before they happen, for recovering a sense of calm you can locate again later, for working towards a goal, and for the manifestation work covered in more depth at the centre's workshops.

A caveat worth stating plainly: visualisation supports action, it does not substitute for it. Anyone promising that picturing something is sufficient on its own is selling you something.

Who This Helps

A note for people with trauma histories: closed-eye work and body focus can occasionally bring up more than expected. That is workable and it is not dangerous, but it should be done with someone in the room who can adjust the approach. Say so beforehand and the session will be built accordingly.

  • «People who have tried meditating alone repeatedly and concluded they cannot do it
  • «Anyone whose mind speeds up rather than settles in silence
  • «People carrying stress that has stopped responding to ordinary rest
  • «Those who need a practical way to interrupt anxious spirals during the day
  • «Anyone struggling to fall asleep because the day replays the moment they lie down
  • «People in therapy who want something to practise between sessions
  • «Anyone who wants a meditation practice built for their life rather than a generic recording

Building a Practice You Will Actually Keep

The point of guided sessions is not indefinite dependence on being guided. It is to give you the experience of your own mind settling — so you know what you are aiming for — and then to hand the practice over to you in a form that fits your life.

That usually means something much shorter than people expect. Five honest minutes daily beats forty minutes attempted twice and abandoned. Sessions include working out where the practice can realistically live in your day, which for most people is the difference between a practice and a good intention.

Used Alongside Other Work

Guided meditation is often woven into counselling, hypnotherapy, Reiki and inner child work rather than taken on its own. It is a useful stabiliser: when someone is too activated to do deeper work productively, meditation is frequently what makes the deeper work possible.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

I cannot stop my thoughts. Can I still meditate?+

Yes, and the premise of the question is the problem. Meditation is not the absence of thought. It is noticing that attention has wandered and bringing it back, over and over. That noticing is the practice. A session in which you return your attention two hundred times is a successful session.

Is guided meditation the same as hypnotherapy?+

No. Both use a relaxed, focused state, but hypnotherapy is a therapeutic method aimed at specific subconscious change and works with suggestion. Guided meditation is a practice aimed at calming and training attention. Hypnotherapy is offered separately at the centre.

What if I cannot visualise pictures?+

A significant number of people do not see clear mental images, and some see nothing at all. It makes no difference. Sessions can be run through sound, physical sensation or simply a sense of a scene without pictures. Tell your practitioner and the approach will be adapted.

Do I need any experience?+

None. Most people who come for guided sessions are beginners, and many are beginners who have already tried and given up. That is a normal starting point, not a disadvantage.

What if I fall asleep?+

It happens often, especially in the first few sessions and especially in people who are exhausted. It is not a failure. If you are falling asleep every time, that is useful information about your sleep debt and worth discussing.

Can this be done online?+

Yes, and it works particularly well online because you are practising in the room where you will keep practising. All you need is a quiet space, headphones and somewhere comfortable to sit or lie down.
