Why It Is Hard to Talk About
Loneliness carries a stigma the other difficulties do not. Saying you are anxious is acceptable; saying you are lonely feels like confessing that nobody chose you. So people say they are busy instead, and the isolation deepens.
- «Being surrounded by family and still unknown by any of them
- «Friendships that have thinned into occasional messages
- «Moving city or country and never rebuilding a circle
- «A marriage where you are companionable and not close
- «Working remotely, where weeks pass without unplanned conversation
- «Being the one everyone relies on, and having nobody to rely on
- «After a bereavement, divorce, or children leaving

The Loop It Creates
Loneliness is self-perpetuating, which is why it rarely resolves on its own. Prolonged isolation makes people more alert to rejection and more likely to read neutral behaviour as coldness. You then withdraw slightly, others read that as disinterest, and the distance grows.
None of this is a character flaw. It is a well-documented pattern, and knowing it is happening makes it interruptible.

What Counselling Does
- «Establishing what kind of connection is actually missing — intimate, social, or a sense of belonging, which need different remedies
- «Working on the rejection sensitivity that isolation builds
- «Practical, low-stakes steps to rebuild contact, at a scale you will actually do
- «Deepening existing relationships, which is often easier than making new ones
- «Examining the belief that you are a burden, which stops people reaching out
- «Addressing depression or social anxiety where they are keeping the loneliness in place

Why Delhi Specifically
Most of Delhi's professional workforce came from somewhere else, arriving without the network they grew up inside. Add commutes that consume two or three hours a day, distances that turn a nearby friend into a monthly one, and a rate of job movement that dissolves social circles every couple of years, and the structural conditions for loneliness are unusually strong here.
There is also the version people find hardest to name: loneliness inside a full household. Being surrounded by family while none of the real parts of your life can be discussed produces it quite efficiently, and carries an added layer of guilt for feeling it.

What a Session Involves
There is an apparent paradox in treating loneliness with a professional relationship, and it resolves quickly in practice. For many clients it is the first setting in years where they have talked about themselves without managing the other person's reaction, and that experience does part of the work on its own.
Beyond that the work covers the social threat sensitivity that sustained loneliness produces — the tendency to read delayed replies as rejection and invitations as politeness — and the specific beliefs that stop people initiating contact. Where the pattern is longstanding rather than situational, it usually connects to something earlier that made connection feel unsafe.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
Is it strange to see a therapist about loneliness?+
No, and it is more common than you would guess. Loneliness has a measurable effect on mental and physical health, and it responds well to being worked on rather than waited out.
Will you just tell me to join a class?+
No. Advice like that ignores why previous attempts did not stick. The work is on what makes connection difficult for you specifically, which is what makes the practical steps hold.
I am married and lonely. Is that normal?+
It is common and it is worth addressing. Loneliness inside a relationship is often about the quality of contact rather than its quantity, and couples work can help where both are willing.
Can this be done online?+
Yes, and it works well — particularly for people whose isolation is partly geographic.
Is loneliness really something to see a counsellor about?+
Yes. Sustained loneliness has documented effects on sleep, immune function and cardiovascular health, and it is closely linked to depression. It is not a soft problem and it is not evidence that you are unlikeable.
What if I am lonely inside my marriage or family?+
This is one of the more common presentations and one of the least discussed. Loneliness within a relationship usually signals that emotional contact has thinned rather than that the relationship has failed, and it is frequently addressable.
