Online Therapy vs In-Person: Which Is Right for You?

Online therapy stopped being a compromise some years ago. For most common difficulties the research finds outcomes broadly comparable to face-to-face work. That said, the two are not identical, and for some people and some problems the difference matters.

What the Evidence Says

What the Evidence Says

For anxiety, depression, stress and most everyday difficulties, studies consistently find online therapy about as effective as in-person. The therapeutic relationship — which matters more than the method — forms perfectly well over video for the majority of people.

Where the evidence is weaker is severe mental illness, active risk of self-harm, and situations where the client cannot secure a private space.

Where Online Is Better

Where Online Is Better

Delhi traffic alone makes a case. A session that costs ninety minutes of travel either side is one many people quietly stop attending. Consistency matters more than setting, and online sessions are simply easier to keep.

It also helps if you live outside the city, travel frequently for work, have limited mobility, are managing childcare, or want a degree of privacy that walking into a clinic does not allow. For clients abroad it is often the only practical option.

Some people are also noticeably more open at home. Being in your own space, on your own sofa, lowers the barrier for some clients considerably.

Where In-Person Is Better

Where In-Person Is Better

If you cannot guarantee privacy at home, in-person is better — and this is a common problem in shared family homes, where the very issues you want to discuss may be sitting in the next room.

Face-to-face also gives the therapist fuller access to body language and physical response, which matters more in trauma and somatic work. Some body-based methods are simply easier in the room.

And if you are in acute distress, being physically with another person carries a weight that video does not reproduce.

What About Hypnotherapy and Energy Work?

What About Hypnotherapy and Energy Work?

Hypnotherapy works well online. It is guided by voice, and being in your own familiar space often helps people relax more quickly than a consulting room does. Reiki and distance healing are likewise established parts of those traditions rather than an improvisation.

You Do Not Have to Choose Permanently

You Do Not Have to Choose Permanently

Many clients mix the two — starting in person to establish the relationship then moving online, or attending in person when possible and online when travel or illness intervenes. There is no requirement to decide once and stick to it.

Practical Requirements for Online Sessions

Practical Requirements for Online Sessions

A private space where you will not be overheard, a reasonably stable internet connection, headphones, and a device positioned so your face is visible. Sitting in a parked car is a legitimate option many clients use for privacy.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Is online therapy confidential?+

The session itself is, on the therapist's side. Your side is your responsibility — a private room and headphones. Ask which platform is used and whether sessions are recorded. They should not be, without your explicit consent.

What if my internet fails mid-session?+

Agree a fallback at the start, usually a phone call. It happens occasionally and is easily managed when planned for.

Can I switch between online and in-person?+

Yes, and many people do. Discuss it with your therapist rather than simply not turning up.

Does online work for couples counselling?+

It can, though it is more demanding. Both partners need to be able to hear and be heard, ideally in the same room with one device. Where conflict is high, in-person is usually easier to manage.
