Most parents who ask about counselling are really asking about their child: the tantrums, the silence, the marks, the phone. Often the most useful place to start is the adult side of the problem, because that is the part you can change this week. If your child needs sessions of their own, that is a different service, described on the Child & Teen Counselling in South Delhi page. This page is about you.

Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

What parents bring to sessions

  • «Toddler and primary-school behaviour: tantrums, hitting, bedtime battles, a child who will not eat, and the exhaustion of saying the same thing forty times a day
  • «Screen time and phones, where every rule becomes a negotiation and you are not sure what a reasonable limit even is any more
  • «Exam pressure seen from the parent's chair: how much to push, how to stop checking the portal every hour, and how to keep marks from taking over the dinner table
  • «Teenagers who have stopped talking, answer in single words and live behind a closed door
  • «Co-parenting after separation or divorce, when two households have different rules and the child carries messages between them
  • «Joint-family disagreements about discipline, where a grandparent undoes every boundary and you feel overruled in your own home
  • «Working-parent guilt, for mothers and fathers alike, and the quiet belief that every problem your child has is the result of your being at the office
  • «Parenting a child who is anxious, when your reassurance seems to make the worry bigger rather than smaller

Why the parent side matters

Children respond to the atmosphere around them more than to the words used. A parent who is anxious about board results produces an anxious household whatever they say at breakfast. A mother who feels undermined by her mother-in-law disciplines inconsistently, and the child learns quickly which adult to approach for which answer. None of this is blame. It is simply where the leverage is. When a parent becomes calmer, clearer and more consistent, the child usually shifts too.

Sessions also give parents somewhere to put their own feelings. Anger at a teenager, disappointment about a result, fear about what the neighbours or relatives will say, grief after a separation: these are hard to process in front of the child and hard to admit in a family WhatsApp group. Saying them out loud to someone outside the family makes it far less likely that they come out sideways at home.

Parenting in an Indian household

Advice written for nuclear families in other countries often assumes one or two adults make every decision. Many families in Delhi live with grandparents, share childcare with a didi or nanny, and have uncles and aunts with strong views about tuition, streams and marriage. Taanya works with that reality rather than against it. The aim is not to push anyone out of the family but to help the parents agree on a small number of rules and hold them together, respectfully, with the older generation.

Expectations around marks, the comparison with cousins, the idea that a child who answers back is a reflection on the whole family, and the pressure to decide on engineering or medicine by Class 9 are all part of ordinary parenting here. Sessions can be in English, Hindi or Punjabi, which helps when a grandparent joins or when the most honest version of a worry comes out in Hindi.

How sessions run

Most parenting counselling is with the parents alone. One parent can come on their own, which is common when the other is travelling or reluctant. Both parents together is often more useful, especially where the two of you disagree about discipline or about how worried to be. Separated parents can attend together where it is safe and both are willing, or separately where that works better.

Occasionally a family session is helpful, with the child or teenager present, or with a grandparent who plays a large part in daily care. That is decided with you, never sprung on anyone. The first session is spent understanding the family, what has been tried and what you most want to change; after that the work is practical, with specific things to try at home and time to review what happened when you did.

A note on safety

Parenting counselling is a scheduled service, not an emergency one, and it is not psychiatric or medical treatment. If you or your child is in immediate danger, or a child has spoken about ending their life, call Tele-MANAS on 14416, KIRAN on 1800-599-0019 or 112, or go to the nearest emergency department.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Does my child need to come to parenting counselling?+

No. Parenting counselling is for the parents, and most sessions take place without the child. If it becomes clear that your child would benefit from their own sessions, that can be discussed, and it is covered separately on the Child & Teen Counselling in South Delhi page.

My partner does not think we need help. Can I come alone?+

Yes. Changing how one parent responds often changes the pattern at home. Many partners join later once they see the sessions are practical rather than a judgement on them.

We are separated. Can we both attend?+

Yes, if you are both willing and it is safe to be in the same session. The focus stays on the children and on the arrangements between two homes, not on reopening the marriage. Separate sessions are also possible.

Can a grandparent join?+

Yes, where it is useful and the parents want it. Sessions can move into Hindi or Punjabi so that an older family member can take part comfortably.

Is this the same as family counselling?+

It overlaps, but the focus is narrower. Parenting counselling concentrates on the parents and their approach to the children. Family counselling looks at the relationships across the whole household, and the Family Counselling in South Delhi page describes that work.

Can sessions be online?+

Yes. Online sessions by video work well for parenting counselling, and both parents can join from different places.
