Questions to Discuss Before Marriage

Couples planning a wedding spend months on venues and guest lists and often a surprisingly small amount of time on the questions that will actually determine what the marriage is like.

Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

Money

Money

Will you combine finances, keep them separate, or both? Who manages what? What do each of you consider a reasonable amount to spend without consulting the other? What debts or obligations exist? How much are you each expected to contribute to your parents, now and later?

That last question is one of the most common sources of conflict in Indian marriages and one of the least often raised beforehand.

Family and In-Laws

Family and In-Laws

Where will you live, and for how long? What involvement will parents have in decisions? What will each of you do if your family and your spouse disagree? How much time is expected at festivals and family events?

The unspoken assumption here is usually that the other person's expectations match your own. They frequently do not, and neither of you is being unreasonable — you simply grew up with different defaults.

Children

Children

Whether you want them, roughly when, and how many. What happens if you cannot have them — is adoption or fertility treatment something you would consider? How will you divide the work of raising them? What about discipline, schooling, religion, language?

Work and Ambition

Work and Ambition

Whose career takes priority if there is a conflict? What happens if one of you is offered work in another city or country? Will both of you work after children? What if one of you wants to change direction or start something risky?

Faith, Values and Daily Life

Faith, Values and Daily Life

What practices matter to each of you, and what would you want your children raised with? Beyond religion, the daily texture matters too — how you each handle conflict, how much time alone you need, how you feel about friendships outside the marriage, what a weekend should look like.

The Question That Matters Most

The Question That Matters Most

How do we handle it when we disagree? Every couple disagrees. The difference between marriages that hold and marriages that grind down is rarely the number of disagreements — it is what happens during them. Whether either of you withdraws, escalates, keeps score, or is able to repair afterwards.

Why Pre-Marital Counselling Helps

Why Pre-Marital Counselling Helps

Not because a couple needs fixing before starting. Because a neutral third person notices the assumptions you cannot see in your own conversation, and can raise the subjects that feel too awkward or too ominous to introduce yourselves when everyone is meant to be happy.

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Is pre-marital counselling only for couples with problems?+

No. Most couples who come are doing perfectly well and want to start with a clearer understanding. Coming while things are good is considerably easier than coming when they are not.

What if we disagree on something important?+

Then you have found it early, which is the point. Many differences are workable once they are explicit. What causes damage is discovering them two years in, when both people assumed the matter was settled in their own favour.

Should we come for an arranged marriage?+

It is arguably more useful, because you have had less time together to discover assumptions naturally. A structured conversation covers ground that would otherwise take years to surface.

How many sessions does it take?+

Usually a short course, focused on the areas most relevant to you. It is a considerably smaller commitment than most couples expect.
