Couples Therapy and Relationship Counselling Online Across India

“Two people, two screens, one session. Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi offers couples therapy online and relationship counselling across India, from her practice in New Delhi, in English, Hindi or Punjabi.”

Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi holds an MA in Counselling Psychology and a Diploma in Holistic Healing & Counselling from the Holistic Living Training Institute in Melbourne, is a certified member of the Australian Holistic Healers & Counsellors Association (AHHCA), and practised in Australia for thirteen years before returning to India. She is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, NLP Life Coach and Reiki Master with more than twenty-five years of practice, and she works from a solo practice in New Delhi, in person and online, in English, Hindi or Punjabi. She also holds certificates in pre-marital counselling and in marriage and relationship counselling.

Couples counselling used to require both people in the same room, which ruled out a great many of the couples in India who needed it. Online changes that. Partners in different cities, one posted abroad, a spouse still in the family home while the other is in a metro flat — all of them can be in the same session.

Who books couples counselling online

  • «Long-distance couples — one in Bangalore, one in Delhi — whose relationship lives on the phone and is fraying there
  • «Couples where one partner is posted elsewhere: defence, banking, IT rotations, a project in another state
  • «NRI marriages, with a spouse in Dubai, Toronto or Sydney and the other in India, and the family on both sides watching
  • «Engaged couples, arranged or otherwise, who want to have the hard conversations — money, children, in-laws, careers, faith — before the wedding rather than after
  • «Married couples in a joint family where the strain is not between the two of them but around them
  • «Couples rebuilding after an affair, where trust has gone and both people want to know whether it can come back
  • «Couples who have simply stopped talking, and cannot say when it happened

How online couples sessions run

Both partners in the same room on one screen, or in two cities on two devices — either works, and the second is sometimes better, because nobody is watching their partner's face while they speak. Sessions are by video and last fifty to sixty minutes. Individual sessions for one or both partners can run alongside the joint work when something needs to be said first without the other present, and what is said individually stays there unless the person chooses to bring it to the couple.

The work is about communication first — how the two of you argue, what each of you hears, and what is being asked for underneath the complaint — and then about the specific thing that brought you: the affair, the in-laws, the decision about children, the sex that stopped, the money. Pre-marital work is more structured, a set of conversations that arranged marriages in particular rarely get to have before the wedding, and that love marriages often assume they have already had.

In-laws, joint families and the marriage around the marriage

A large share of couples work in India is not about the couple. It is about a mother-in-law's kitchen, a brother's share of the business, a decision about where to live that was made by someone else. Online sessions let a couple talk about the family without the family in the next room, and where it helps, a parent can be brought into a session by video from wherever they are.

Hindi, English and the language of a marriage

Many couples speak a different language to each other than they do at work, and some speak a different language to each other than to their own families. Sessions run in English, Hindi, Punjabi or the mix the two of you actually use, and a partner who is more comfortable in Hindi is never left at a disadvantage.

How this works

Sessions are online from New Delhi; in-person appointments are only available at D-96 Anand Niketan, New Delhi 110021. Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi is a counselling psychologist, not a psychiatrist; she does not diagnose psychiatric illness or prescribe medication, and where either is indicated for one partner she will say so and refer. Couples counselling is not appropriate where there is ongoing violence or coercion; there, individual sessions and a referral to the right support come first. This is a scheduled service, not a crisis one: in immediate danger, call Tele-MANAS on 14416, KIRAN on 1800-599-0019 or 112, or go to the nearest emergency department.

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Do we both need to be on the same screen?+

No. Same room on one device or two cities on two devices both work. If you are together, sit side by side rather than one behind the other, so that both of you are equally in the frame.

Can we do pre-marital counselling if the marriage is arranged?+

Yes, and it is one of the most useful things an arranged match can do. The sessions cover the conversations two people who have known each other a few months have not yet had — money, children, in-laws, careers, faith, intimacy — in a structured way and on neutral ground.

Can one of us come alone first?+

Yes. Many couples start with one partner, and some partners never join. Individual work on a relationship is real work, and it does not require the other person's consent or presence.

Can counselling help after an affair?+

Often, if both people want to find out whether the relationship can be rebuilt. The work is about the truth of what happened, what it meant, and whether trust can be re-earned, and it is slow. Where one partner has already decided to leave, the sessions help end things without more damage.

Are sessions in Hindi or English?+

Either, or the mix you use at home. Punjabi is also available. Each partner can speak the language they think in, and nothing is lost in translation.
