Signs of Anxiety You Should Not Ignore

Anxiety is not unusual. Everyone feels it before an exam, an interview or a difficult conversation, and in moderation it is useful — it sharpens attention and prepares the body to act.

The Physical Signs People Miss

The Physical Signs People Miss

Anxiety is felt in the body long before most people name it as anxiety. Common signs include a racing or pounding heart, shallow breathing or a sense of not getting enough air, tightness in the chest, a knot or churn in the stomach, nausea, jaw and shoulder tension, headaches, trembling hands, sweating, and exhaustion that sleep does not repair.

Many people go to a doctor for these symptoms first, and rightly so — they should be checked. But when investigations come back clear and the symptoms persist, anxiety is frequently the explanation.

The Mental and Emotional Signs

The Mental and Emotional Signs

Persistent worry that moves from one subject to the next. Anticipating the worst outcome as a default. Replaying conversations afterwards. Difficulty concentrating or holding a thought. Irritability that seems out of proportion. A sense of dread with no identifiable cause. Difficulty falling asleep because the mind will not quieten.

The Behaviour Changes

The Behaviour Changes

Often the clearest signal, and the one families notice first. Avoiding situations, places or people. Declining invitations. Needing repeated reassurance. Checking things repeatedly. Procrastinating on anything that feels risky. Leaving early. Drinking more.

Avoidance is the most important of these, because it works in the short term and makes things worse in the long term. Each avoided situation confirms to the brain that the threat was real.

When Worry Becomes a Disorder

When Worry Becomes a Disorder

There is no exact line, but useful markers are duration, intensity and interference. Worry that has persisted for months rather than days, that is disproportionate to the actual situation, and that is interfering with work, sleep, relationships or daily functioning.

If you are arranging your life around avoiding anxiety, that is the point at which it has become the thing in charge.

When to Seek Help Sooner

When to Seek Help Sooner

Please seek help promptly rather than waiting if you are experiencing panic attacks, if anxiety is stopping you working or leaving the house, if you are using alcohol or substances to manage it, if you are not sleeping for extended periods, or if you are having thoughts of harming yourself.

Thoughts of suicide or self-harm need urgent professional attention. Contact a doctor, a psychiatrist or an emergency service the same day. This is not something to work through alone or to bring to a first counselling appointment in three weeks' time.

What Helps

What Helps

Anxiety responds well to treatment, and better the earlier it is addressed. Counselling identifies what maintains the pattern. Clinical hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level where the anticipatory fear sits. Breathing and mindfulness techniques give you something usable in the moment. Where anxiety is severe, medication prescribed by a psychiatrist can reduce symptoms enough for therapy to be effective.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Can anxiety cause real physical symptoms?+

Yes, entirely real ones. Chest tightness, digestive trouble, headaches and genuine exhaustion are produced by the body's stress response, not imagined. That said, physical symptoms should always be checked medically before being attributed to anxiety.

Will anxiety go away on its own?+

Anxiety caused by a specific temporary situation often eases when the situation resolves. Anxiety that has persisted for months, particularly where avoidance has set in, usually does not resolve without intervention.

Is medication necessary?+

Not always. Mild to moderate anxiety frequently responds to therapy alone. Where it is severe, medication can make therapy possible. That is a decision for a psychiatrist, not a counsellor.

How long does anxiety treatment take?+

A specific phobia or a recent stress reaction may resolve in a short course of sessions. Long-standing generalised anxiety usually takes several months. Improvement in sleep and physical symptoms often comes before the worry itself settles.
