Should We Try Couples Counselling? 8 Signs
Most couples arrive at counselling considerably later than they should — often years after the difficulty began, and sometimes when one partner has already privately decided to leave. Waiting does not make the work easier.

Treatment & Support

1. The Same Argument on Repeat
Not many arguments, one argument, wearing different clothes. If you can predict how it will unfold from the opening line, the disagreement is no longer about the subject — it is about something underneath that has never been resolved.

2. You Have Stopped Arguing Altogether
Often mistaken for improvement. Conflict means both people still believe the outcome matters. Its absence more often means one or both have given up on being heard and have quietly withdrawn. Indifference is a worse sign than anger.

3. Communication Has Become Logistics
Conversation reduced to schedules, money, children and household administration. Efficient, functional, and empty of anything personal. Many couples in this state describe themselves as flatmates who share a surname.

4. A Breach of Trust
An affair, financial secrecy, a serious lie. Some couples do recover from these, and a fair number do — but rarely alone, and rarely by agreeing not to discuss it. Left unaddressed it does not fade; it becomes the frame everything else is seen through.

5. Family or In-Law Pressure
Particularly common in Indian families, where a couple's relationship is rarely private. Disagreement about boundaries with parents and in-laws — how much involvement, how much obligation, whose family takes precedence — is one of the most frequent presenting issues, and is often mislabelled as a personality clash.

6. A Major Transition
A new baby, a job loss, relocation, a bereavement, a diagnosis, children leaving home. Transitions expose whatever was already fragile. Struggling during one is not a sign of a bad relationship; ignoring the strain is what causes the damage.

7. Physical Distance
A prolonged loss of physical closeness, where one or both are unhappy about it. It is usually a symptom rather than the problem, and it is one of the hardest things for couples to raise without help in the room.

8. One of You Is Considering Leaving
Even privately. Even as a thought you have not said aloud. Counselling at this stage still frequently helps — but the odds are considerably better if you come while there is still something to work with rather than after the decision is made.

When Couples Counselling Is Not Appropriate
Where there is abuse — physical, sexual, or a pattern of coercive control and intimidation — joint counselling is not appropriate and can be actively unsafe. It can give an abusive partner more information to use, and can put the other person at greater risk after the session.
If this describes your situation, please seek individual support and speak to a domestic violence service or the police. Your safety comes before the relationship. This is not a judgement about your marriage; it is about the format of help being wrong for the circumstances.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
What if my partner refuses to come?+
Come alone. Individual work on a relationship is genuinely useful — you can only change your own half of a pattern, and that change often shifts the dynamic. Some partners join later once they see it is not an ambush.
Will the counsellor take sides?+
No. The counsellor's role is the relationship rather than either individual. If you feel consistently outnumbered, say so directly — it is worth addressing rather than enduring.
Can counselling save any marriage?+
No, and it should not claim to. Sometimes the useful outcome is a clear, less damaging separation, particularly where children are involved. That is a legitimate result rather than a failure.
How long does couples counselling take?+
A specific issue may resolve in a short course. Long-standing patterns take months. Progress usually shows first in how you argue rather than in how often.
