Treatment & Support

What It Looks Like at Sixteen
Adolescent depression often presents as irritability rather than sadness, which is why it is so regularly missed.
- «Anger and irritability out of proportion to what triggered it
- «Withdrawal to their room and away from friends they used to see constantly
- «A drop in academic performance in a child who was managing before
- «Sleep that has inverted — awake all night, unable to get up
- «Losing interest in things they genuinely loved, not just things you wanted them to do
- «Physical complaints — headaches, stomach aches — with no medical cause found
- «Comments about being a burden, or about things being pointless

The Pressure Specific to Here
- «Academic competition that begins early and is relentless through the board years
- «Career decided by family, with the child's own preference treated as a phase
- «Constant comparison with cousins, siblings and neighbours' children
- «Very little privacy, and phones or diaries read as a matter of course
- «Mental illness treated as a family reputation issue rather than a health issue
- «Sleep sacrificed to coaching classes on top of a full school day

For Parents
Two things reliably make it worse: telling them they have nothing to be depressed about, and treating it as a discipline problem. Two things reliably help: taking it seriously the first time, and getting them help without making it a family scandal.
Parental sessions are available and often valuable — sometimes more so than working with the teenager, particularly where the household dynamic is part of the picture.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
My child refuses to come.+
Common. Start with parental sessions — changing how the home responds shifts things meaningfully, and teenagers frequently agree to attend later once it stops feeling like a punishment.
Is what I say confidential from my parents?+
For teenagers, largely yes, and that is explained clearly at the start along with the limits. Some parental involvement is usually necessary, but sessions are not reported back.
Do they need medication?+
That is a psychiatric decision, not one made here. Many teenagers do well with counselling alone; some need both. If a psychiatric assessment is warranted you will be told directly.
Is this just exam stress?+
It might be, and exam stress is addressed separately. But when low mood persists after the exams end, it is worth taking seriously as something more.
