Theta Healing vs Reiki: What Is the Difference?

Both are energy healing modalities, both are offered by many of the same practitioners, and people frequently assume they are variations of the same thing. They are not. They differ in origin, in method, and in what they are useful for.

Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

Reiki in Brief

Reiki in Brief

Developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early twentieth century. The practitioner channels energy through light hand placements while the client lies still, usually in silence. The client is largely passive and often falls asleep.

Reiki is not targeted at a specific belief or problem. It is closer to deep restoration — people use it for stress, exhaustion, sleep and recovery.

Theta Healing in Brief

Theta Healing in Brief

Developed by Vianna Stibal in the United States in the 1990s, so it is a modern method rather than a traditional one. It uses a guided meditative state — named after theta brainwave activity — in which the practitioner works with the client to identify a limiting subconscious belief, and then to release and replace it.

The client participates actively throughout. There is conversation, questioning, and a specific belief being worked on.

The Practical Difference

The Practical Difference

Reiki is passive, non-verbal and general. Theta Healing is active, verbal and specific.

In a Reiki session you rest and receive. In a Theta session you are talking, and the work involves digging for the belief underneath the presenting problem — often several layers down from where you started.

Which Suits Which Problem

Which Suits Which Problem

Reiki tends to suit exhaustion, stress, sleep difficulty, grief and general depletion — situations where what is needed is rest and restoration.

Theta Healing tends to suit a specific stuck pattern that you can name: a recurring belief about money, worth, relationships or capability. If you can articulate the belief, it gives the work something to grip.

An Honest Note on Both

An Honest Note on Both

Neither has established scientific support for the mechanism it proposes. Theta Healing in particular makes broader claims than Reiki does, and some practitioners make claims about physical illness that are not defensible.

Use either as supportive work for wellbeing, stress and stuck patterns. Do not use either in place of medical or psychiatric treatment, and treat any practitioner who suggests you should as a reason to leave.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Can I have both?+

Yes, and many people do — often Theta for a specific belief and Reiki for restoration. Practitioners trained in both frequently combine them within a course of work.

Which should I try first?+

If you are exhausted and want rest, Reiki. If you can name a pattern you are stuck in, Theta. If you are unsure, say so and let the practitioner assess it with you.

Do I have to talk during Theta Healing?+

Yes, it is conversational by design. If you would rather not talk, Reiki is the better fit.

Is Theta Healing traditional?+

No. It dates from the 1990s and is not an ancient practice, whatever some marketing implies. That does not make it useless — it does mean it should be described accurately.
