What Is EFT Tapping and Does It Work?

EFT — Emotional Freedom Techniques, usually just called tapping — looks distinctly odd the first time you see it. Someone taps a sequence of points on their face and torso with their fingertips while speaking aloud about a problem.

What Actually Happens in a Round

What Actually Happens in a Round

You identify a specific issue — a feeling, a memory, a physical sensation — and rate its intensity out of ten. You then tap with two fingers through a sequence of points: the side of the hand, eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone and under the arm.

While tapping you say the problem aloud, paired with a statement of self-acceptance. The usual form is: even though I feel this, I deeply and completely accept myself. You then re-rate the intensity, and repeat until it drops.

The Traditional Explanation

The Traditional Explanation

EFT holds that the tapping points are acupuncture meridian points, and that tapping them while focusing on a problem clears a disruption in the body's energy system.

An Honest Assessment

An Honest Assessment

The meridian explanation is not supported by conventional science, and studies comparing real tapping points with deliberately wrong ones have often found similar results. That is a meaningful finding and worth stating plainly.

What is better supported is that people frequently do feel better afterwards. There are plausible conventional explanations: you are naming a feeling precisely, holding attention on it without avoiding it, pairing it with self-acceptance rather than self-criticism, and breathing slowly throughout. Those are recognised therapeutic mechanisms.

Whether the tapping itself does anything specific remains genuinely unsettled. It is a useful tool whose mechanism is not established — and that is a reasonable thing to use, provided nobody claims more for it than that.

What It Is Useful For

What It Is Useful For

Managing acute anxiety and cravings in the moment, taking the edge off a distressing memory, calming physical stress responses, and giving clients something practical to use between sessions. Its main practical advantage is that it is free, portable and self-administered.

Where It Should Not Be Used Alone

Where It Should Not Be Used Alone

Serious trauma should not be worked on alone with tapping. Bringing up traumatic material without support can be overwhelming, and this work belongs with a trained practitioner. EFT is also not a treatment for psychiatric illness and is not a substitute for medical care.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Do I have to say the words aloud?+

Saying it aloud generally works better, most likely because it forces specificity. If you are somewhere public, saying it internally is a reasonable compromise.

How long does a round take?+

A couple of minutes. Most people run several rounds on the same issue, re-rating the intensity each time until it drops meaningfully.

Can I learn EFT myself?+

Yes, for everyday stress and mild anxiety it is straightforward and safe to self-administer. For trauma, grief or long-standing patterns, work with a practitioner.

Why does it work if the meridian theory is doubtful?+

The most likely answer is that it combines exposure, precise naming of the feeling, self-acceptance and slow breathing — all of which have independent therapeutic support. The tapping may function mainly as a structure that keeps you doing those things.
