What Is Inner Child Healing?

The term sounds softer than the work is. Inner child healing is not about pretending to be a child, and it is not sentimental. It addresses something quite specific: beliefs and emotional responses formed early in life that continue to run in adulthood.

What the Inner Child Refers To

What the Inner Child Refers To

It is a way of describing the part of you shaped before you had the capacity to evaluate what was happening. A child cannot reason that a parent's anger is about the parent's stress rather than the child's worth. They conclude something simpler and more durable — that they are the problem, or that love has to be earned.

Those conclusions do not expire. They become the assumptions an adult operates on without noticing them.

Where It Shows Up in Adult Life

Where It Shows Up in Adult Life

Reacting far more strongly to something than it warrants. Difficulty accepting a compliment. An inability to say no without guilt. Fear of abandonment that outstrips the situation. Perfectionism. A conviction of not being enough that no achievement settles.

The clue is usually disproportion — a response that feels considerably older and larger than the event that triggered it.

What the Work Involves

What the Work Involves

Identifying the belief and tracing where it was formed. Reaching the emotional memory rather than only the intellectual account of it, which is where hypnotherapy is often used, because knowing the origin rarely dissolves the feeling on its own.

Then the part that gives the approach its name: responding to that younger part of yourself as an adult would — with the understanding, protection or acknowledgement that was not available at the time. It sounds unusual described in the abstract and generally does not feel unusual in the room.

This Is Not About Blaming Parents

This Is Not About Blaming Parents

This concern comes up in almost every first session, and it is a fair one. The work is not an exercise in constructing a case against your family.

Most parents did what they could with what they had. A child can be harmed by circumstances nobody intended — illness, financial strain, a bereavement, a parent's own untreated difficulty. Recognising that something affected you is not an accusation, and it does not require anyone to be at fault.

Who It Helps

Who It Helps

People with long-standing low self-esteem, relationship patterns that repeat across different partners, difficulty with boundaries, persistent anxiety with no clear present-day cause, or the sense of having done a great deal of therapy without something shifting.

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Do I need to have had a difficult childhood?+

No, and many clients describe their childhood as fundamentally happy. Beliefs form from ordinary experiences too — a teacher's remark, comparison with a sibling, a period when a parent was preoccupied.

Will I have to relive painful memories?+

Not in an overwhelming way, and the pace is set by you. Where trauma is present, the work is done slowly and carefully. If revisiting something is not safe, it is not done.

How is this different from ordinary counselling?+

Ordinary counselling often works with the present-day situation and thought patterns. Inner child work goes to the origin of the belief and works at that level. In practice most therapy uses both.

Do I have to tell my family?+

No. This is your work, it is confidential, and it requires no conversation with anyone unless you choose to have one.
