What Burnout Looks Like Here

The thought that it would be a relief when this ends is one of the most common and least spoken experiences in caregiving. It does not mean you want them to die. It means you are exhausted.

  • «Exhaustion that sleep does not touch, because the alertness never fully switches off
  • «Irritability with the person you are caring for, followed by considerable guilt
  • «Numbness — going through the tasks with nothing behind them
  • «Resentment towards siblings or relatives who visit occasionally and comment freely
  • «Losing touch with friends, interests and any identity outside the caring role
  • «Intrusive thoughts about it being over, and horror at having had them
  • «Physical symptoms: your own health quietly deteriorating while you monitor someone else's

The Particular Indian Pressures

Caregiving here is usually assumed rather than arranged, and it lands unevenly.

  • «The expectation that a daughter-in-law or unmarried daughter will simply absorb it
  • «Professional care being seen as abandonment rather than as a reasonable option
  • «Siblings abroad who contribute financially and consider that settled
  • «Multi-generational households where there is no physical space to recover in
  • «Speaking about the difficulty being read as disrespect towards elders
  • «No formal respite provision, so breaks have to be negotiated with relatives

What Counselling Offers

Family sessions are possible where the load needs redistributing and the conversation has become impossible to have without it turning into a fight.

  • «A space where you can say the unsayable without being told you do not mean it
  • «Working through guilt, which is usually the largest single load and is rarely proportionate
  • «Practical boundaries — what can be delegated, refused, paid for or scheduled
  • «Anticipatory grief, which is real: you are often mourning someone still present, particularly with dementia
  • «Sustaining some identity outside the role, so there is something left when it ends
  • «Preparing for the end and for the disorientation that frequently follows it

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

I feel selfish even booking this.+

That reaction is close to universal among caregivers and is worth examining rather than obeying. Sustained caregiving is not possible from an empty tank, and depletion tends to show up as irritability with the person you are caring for.

I cannot get away for an hour. How would I attend?+

Online sessions exist substantially for this reason, and they can be scheduled around care routines, including early or late. Working out how to get one uninterrupted hour is often itself part of the early work.

Is it normal to resent them?+

Yes. Resentment is a normal response to unrelenting demand and it says nothing about your love for them. Unspoken, it tends to leak out as sharpness; spoken in the right place, it becomes manageable.

What about after they die?+

Bereavement after long caregiving is complicated — grief mixed with relief, and often a loss of purpose and structure. Support through that period is available and is commonly needed.

Can other family members join?+

Yes, where that would help. Family sessions are useful when the distribution of care needs to be renegotiated.
