Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

What Burnout Looks Like

The recognised picture has three parts, and most people have all three by the time they seek help:

Around that, the familiar physical accompaniments: disturbed sleep, tension headaches, digestive trouble, catching everything going around, dread that starts on Sunday afternoon.

Many people notice it first through behaviour rather than feeling. Snapping at family. Drinking more. Working later while achieving less. Losing interest in everything that used to be recreational, because there is nothing left over.

  • «Exhaustion that sleep does not fix, including on holiday
  • «Cynicism and detachment — work that once mattered now feels pointless, and colleagues have become irritants
  • «A collapse in sense of competence, where you are convinced you are performing badly even when you are not

Burnout Is Not Depression, Though It Can Become It

Burnout is situational. Its centre of gravity is work, and people with burnout usually still feel some relief when genuinely away from it. Depression is broader — it colours everything, including things that have nothing to do with the job.

The distinction matters because the treatments differ. Untreated burnout does slide into depression fairly often, and by then the situational fix no longer works on its own.

Where the picture is clearly depression, that is said plainly and treated accordingly, including referral to a psychiatrist where medication is indicated.

The Particular Shape of It in Delhi

Long hours are normal here, and normalised, which makes it hard to notice when you have gone past what is sustainable. A two-hour commute is an ordinary part of the day. Availability on WhatsApp at eleven at night is expected without ever being stated as a rule.

Add the pressure of a job that a family made sacrifices for, the reluctance to be seen as someone who could not handle it, and the calculation that leaving means losing a title that carries weight at every family gathering.

Startups and consultancies bring their own version, where exhaustion is worn as evidence of commitment and taking leave is treated as a signal about your ambition.

What Counselling Actually Does About It

Nobody here will tell you to quit your job. That advice is cheap and usually not available to the person receiving it.

What the work does cover: separating what can be changed from what cannot; identifying which parts of the load are genuinely imposed and which you have taken on because saying no felt impossible; rebuilding recovery time, which is not a luxury but the mechanism by which exhaustion resolves; and dealing with what burnout has done to your sleep, your temper and your marriage.

For some people it also means an honest look at whether the job is survivable in its current form, and planning an exit properly rather than dramatically.

Where the exhaustion is physiological and entrenched, hypnotherapy and somatic work help re-establish sleep, which is usually the first thing that has to be fixed before anything else moves.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Is burnout a real diagnosis?+

The WHO classifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition, which sometimes gets misreported as "not real". The exhaustion, the sleep disruption and the effect on health are entirely real, and it responds to treatment.

Do I have to leave my job to recover?+

Usually not. Most people recover in the job, once the load and the recovery time are restructured and the pattern that produced the overload is addressed. Sometimes the job genuinely is the problem, and then the conversation is about leaving well.

Can we meet outside working hours?+

Yes. Evening and weekend slots are available, and online sessions make this considerably easier for anyone working out of Gurgaon or Noida.

How long does this take?+

Many people feel meaningfully different within six to eight sessions, particularly once sleep improves. Where burnout has run for years, or has tipped into depression, it takes longer.

Will my employer know?+

No. Sessions are private and no employer is contacted. Where you are using an employer-funded programme, that arrangement is separate from this practice.

Where do sessions happen?+

D-96 Anand Niketan, New Delhi 110021, in South Delhi, or online. Call +91-9999344415.
