Your Pain Is Not Imaginary
Many people arrive having been told, directly or by implication, that the pain is in their head — often after tests came back normal. Normal tests do not mean absent pain. They mean the cause has not been found, which is a different statement.
Pain is produced by the nervous system, and the nervous system is influenced by stress, sleep, fear and mood. That is not the same as the pain being invented. It does mean there are levers worth using.

What Support Involves
- «Managing the fear and hypervigilance that persistent pain builds, which amplify the signal
- «Sleep, which pain disrupts and which then worsens pain — one of the most useful places to intervene
- «Depression and anxiety, extremely common with chronic pain and frequently untreated
- «Grief for the life and capabilities you had before, which deserves naming
- «Pacing, and the boom-and-bust cycle of overdoing it on good days
- «Relationships and identity, particularly where you were the capable one
- «Guided relaxation, hypnotherapy and EFT, which have real evidence for pain perception

What a First Session Involves
The first appointment is mostly listening. How long the pain has been present, what has already been investigated and tried, how it has changed your day, and what you have stopped doing because of it. That last question matters more than it sounds — chronic pain shrinks a life gradually, and most people have not counted what has gone.
No physical examination takes place here and nothing is diagnosed. If your pain has not been fully investigated medically, you will be encouraged to complete that first. Counselling works alongside your medical care, not instead of it.

Why Psychological Support Is Not the Same as Being Told It Is In Your Head
People referred for psychological support with pain frequently arrive angry, and reasonably so — many have spent years being told the pain is not real because a scan came back clear. That is not what this is.
Persistent pain involves a nervous system that has become highly efficient at producing pain signals, and that process is genuinely physical. What psychological work addresses is the amplification: the sleep loss, the fear of movement, the low mood and the constant vigilance, all of which measurably increase pain intensity. Reducing those reduces the pain, without anyone having to claim it was imagined.

Where Hypnotherapy Fits
Clinical hypnosis has one of the better evidence bases in pain management, and it is one of the few complementary approaches where that can honestly be said. It is used to alter the perception of pain and to interrupt the tension-pain-tension cycle. It does not remove a physical cause, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling it.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
Are you saying the pain is psychological?+
No. The pain is real and physical. What is being offered is help with the psychological load of living with it, and with the factors — fear, sleep, stress — that genuinely influence how much pain you experience.
Can this replace my pain medication?+
No. Any change to medication is a decision for you and your doctor. This runs alongside medical treatment.
Will it make the pain go away?+
It may reduce it, since the nervous system responds to stress and fear, but that is not the promise. The reliable gain is a life that is less dominated by pain, even where the pain itself persists.
Can this be done online?+
Yes, and it is often preferable when travelling is itself painful.
Do I have to stop my pain medication?+
No, and you should never change prescribed medication on the basis of counselling. This work runs alongside whatever your doctor has arranged. Some people find their requirements change over time, and that is a conversation for your prescriber.
Will you tell me the pain is psychological?+
No. Persistent pain involves real changes in how the nervous system processes signals. The work addresses what amplifies it — sleep, fear of movement, low mood and vigilance — which is a different claim entirely.
Can this help if my pain has no diagnosis?+
Yes, and this group often benefits most, because the absence of an explanation adds a heavy layer of distress and self-doubt on top of the pain itself. Continue pursuing medical investigation alongside.
