Counselling in Hindi: Online Across India and in South Delhi

“Counselling works in the language you think in. Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi takes sessions in Hindi, English or Punjabi — online across India and abroad, and in person at Anand Niketan in South Delhi.”

Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi holds an MA in Counselling Psychology and a Diploma in Holistic Healing & Counselling from the Holistic Living Training Institute in Melbourne, is a certified member of the Australian Holistic Healers & Counsellors Association (AHHCA), and practised in Australia for thirteen years before returning to India. She is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, NLP Life Coach and Usui Reiki Master with more than twenty-five years of practice, and she works from a solo practice in New Delhi, in person and online, in English, Hindi or Punjabi.

Nobody is asked to pick a language at the door. Most clients start in English, because that is the language of appointments and offices, and drift into Hindi within a few minutes once the conversation reaches family, childhood or anything that hurts. Switching mid-sentence is normal and expected. It is how most people in North India actually talk, and it is how most sessions here actually go.

Why the language of a session matters

Feelings were learnt before English was. For anyone who grew up in a Hindi- or Punjabi-speaking home, the words used when they were scolded, comforted, praised or shamed were not English words, and the memories arrive in the language they were made in. Asked to describe a mother's disapproval in English, a client produces a tidy summary. Asked in Hindi, they produce the actual sentence, in her voice, and the work starts from there.

Idioms matter too. Dil bhaari hona, ghutan, log kya kahenge, mann nahin lagta — these are not translations of clinical terms. They are how distress is experienced and named in Hindi-speaking households, and a counsellor who needs them explained is already one step removed from the person in front of her. Older parents joining a session for a family matter are far more likely to speak, and to be honest, when they are not performing in a second language in front of their adult child.

Who counselling in Hindi suits

  • «People whose English is fluent at work and thin when it comes to feelings — comfortable in a meeting, stuck when asked what they are actually afraid of
  • «Parents and older relatives who have been told to go and see someone and have quietly decided not to, because they assumed it would be in English
  • «Couples where one partner is more at home in Hindi than the other, so that every English-language session leaves one person at a disadvantage
  • «Families sorting out an in-law, inheritance or marriage question where the conversation has to include a grandparent
  • «Students and young professionals from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab who moved to a metro for work and have never found a counsellor who sounds like home
  • «Indians abroad — in Dubai, Toronto, Vancouver, Melbourne or Sydney — who can find an English-speaking therapist on every corner and a Hindi-speaking counselling psychologist almost nowhere

What is available in Hindi

Everything the practice offers. Counselling and psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, grief, stress and relationship difficulty. Clinical hypnotherapy, where a Hindi induction often works better than an English one for someone who thinks in Hindi, because the suggestions land in the language the mind was trained in; smoking, sleep, phobias, weight and performance anxiety are the common requests. Couples and pre-marital counselling in whichever mix of languages the two of you use at home. NLP-based life coaching and confidence work. Reiki, distance Reiki and EFT tapping for those who want them. Punjabi is available for all of the same work.

In person in South Delhi or online

In-person sessions are at D-96 Anand Niketan, New Delhi 110021, in South Delhi near Dhaula Kuan, reached easily from Vasant Vihar, Chanakyapuri, RK Puram, Moti Bagh and the Ring Road. Online sessions by video are open to anyone with a quiet room and a phone, across India and abroad. The work is the same either way; the only difference is whether you come to the room or open the link.

For clients outside India the practical question is the time difference. Dubai is an hour and a half behind Delhi, which is easy. Canada and Australia need an early morning at one end or a late evening at the other, and both are workable once a regular slot is set. Indian families abroad often book for a parent still in India as well as for themselves, and a shared language makes that far simpler.

How this works

Sessions are online from New Delhi for anyone outside Delhi, and in person only at D-96 Anand Niketan, New Delhi 110021. Taanya is a counselling psychologist, not a psychiatrist; she does not diagnose psychiatric illness or prescribe medication, and where medication or a psychiatric assessment is indicated she will say so and refer you to a psychiatrist. This is a scheduled service, not a crisis one: in immediate danger, call Tele-MANAS on 14416, KIRAN on 1800-599-0019 or 112, or go to the nearest emergency department. Tele-MANAS takes calls in Hindi.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Can I switch between Hindi and English during a session?+

Yes, and most people do without noticing. There is no rule about which language a session is in. Start wherever you are comfortable and change whenever the right word happens to be in the other language.

Is counselling available in Punjabi?+

Yes. Punjabi is available for counselling, couples work, hypnotherapy and coaching, in person in South Delhi and online.

Can my parents join a session in Hindi?+

Yes, where it is useful to the work and you want them there. Family sessions with older parents are one of the main reasons people ask for Hindi in the first place. A parent who would sit silent through an English session will usually talk in their own language.

Does hypnotherapy work in Hindi?+

Often better than in English for someone who thinks in Hindi. An induction is a set of spoken suggestions, and they land more deeply in the language you dream in. Clients who are equally fluent in both are simply asked which they would prefer.

I live outside India. Can I still see a Hindi-speaking counsellor?+

Yes. Online sessions are held with clients in the Gulf, Canada, Australia, the UK and elsewhere. You are booked at a fixed time in your own zone, and the session runs by video exactly as it would for someone in Delhi.
