Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

Why It Hurts Physically

People are surprised by the physical component: the chest pain, the appetite that vanishes, sleep that will not come, the nausea.

Attachment is a biological system, not a poetic idea. Losing a primary attachment triggers a genuine stress response — cortisol up, sleep architecture disrupted, appetite suppressed. Brain-imaging work on rejection shows overlap with the regions involved in physical pain, which is why the language of being hurt is not merely metaphorical.

Understanding this helps, because otherwise people conclude something is wrong with them for being this affected by something that happens to everyone.

Why No Contact Works

It is not a tactic to make them miss you, and using it that way is not really no contact.

The mechanism is straightforward. Every message, every check of their profile, restarts the withdrawal. You are asking a system to extinguish an attachment while intermittently reinforcing it, and intermittent reinforcement is the most persistent schedule there is — which is exactly why occasional contact keeps people stuck for years.

Practically: mute or unfollow rather than relying on willpower, and remove the account entirely if muting is not enough. Tell mutual friends you would rather not receive updates. Where you must remain in contact, keep it to logistics.

The first fortnight is the hardest and it does get easier, but not while the wound is being reopened weekly.

The Part That Is Not About Them — Getting Over a Breakup Without Rushing It

The Part That Is Not About Them

A good deal of what hurts is not the person.

It is the future that disappeared — the plans, the assumed shape of the next ten years. That is a real loss and grieving it is not the same as wanting them back.

It is the version of yourself that existed in that relationship, and who no longer has anywhere to be.

It is the practical dismantling: the flat, the shared money, the friend group, the two families who had already met.

And in an Indian context, frequently, it is the public dimension. A broken engagement or a marriage ending is not private. There are relatives to be told, a reputation to be managed, and a set of questions you did not ask for.

What Actually Helps

Time, which is unwelcome advice but true. Most people are functioning normally within a few months and genuinely past it within six to twelve. Rushing it does not shorten it — it defers it.

Structure while the feeling is unavailable. Sleep, food and movement at regular times, particularly on the days when none of it seems worth doing.

Talking about it more than people are comfortable hearing, which is one reason a counsellor is useful — there is a limit to what friends can absorb, and you can feel yourself reaching it.

Resisting the reconstruction of the relationship. Memory is unreliable after loss, and it either idealises what you lost or rewrites the whole thing as a mistake. Neither is accurate and both prevent you from learning anything.

Not making major decisions early. Quitting, relocating, marrying someone else quickly — these are frequently regretted, and the first three months are the worst period in which to decide anything permanent.

When It Has Become Something Else

Grief after a relationship is expected. It becomes something needing attention when it stops moving.

If, after several months, you cannot work or maintain friendships. If you have lost significant weight. If you are drinking or using substances to get through evenings. If there is no fluctuation at all — grief has better and worse days, depression tends to be flat.

If you cannot stop checking on them after a year. If you are having thoughts of ending your life.

That last one needs help now rather than eventually. In India, Tele-MANAS is on 14416 around the clock, KIRAN on 1800-599-0019, and emergency services on 112.

If the Relationship Was Abusive

The pattern is different and considerably more confusing. People leaving controlling or abusive relationships frequently miss the person acutely and feel ashamed of missing them.

That is a recognised response to intermittent reinforcement and it is not a failure of judgement. It also usually needs proper support rather than time alone. In India, the women's helpline is 181 and police are on 112.

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

How long should this take?+

Most people are functioning within a few months and genuinely past it within six to twelve, longer for a marriage or a very long relationship. There is no schedule, and being behind someone else's is not evidence of anything.

Should we stay friends?+

Rarely straight away. It is usually possible much later, once the attachment has actually extinguished. Attempting it immediately generally serves whichever person wants the relationship back.

Is it normal to miss someone who treated me badly?+

Yes, and it is extremely common. Attachment does not track how well you were treated, and unpredictable treatment produces stronger attachment rather than weaker.

Can counselling help with a breakup?+

Yes — for the grief itself, for the patterns that keep recurring across relationships, and for the practical business of rebuilding. Sessions in person at Anand Niketan in South Delhi, or online.
