The Reassurance Trap
The defining feature of health anxiety is that reassurance stops working. A clear scan produces relief that lasts an afternoon, a week if you are lucky, and then the doubt returns — often attached to a new symptom, or to the possibility that the test missed something.
This is not stubbornness. It happens because reassurance treats the symptom rather than the mechanism. Every time you check, google, or seek confirmation, the anxiety drops sharply — and that drop teaches your brain that checking is what kept you safe. So the urge to check gets stronger, and the ability to tolerate uncertainty gets weaker.
- «Repeatedly examining a lump, a mole, a pulse or your own breathing
- «Searching symptoms online, then searching for a reason to dismiss what you found
- «Booking test after test, or avoiding doctors entirely because of what they might say
- «Asking family repeatedly whether it looks normal to them
- «Monitoring your body so closely that you notice sensations most people never register
- «Avoiding exercise, news about illness, or anything that mentions the condition you fear

Where It Comes From
It very often begins with something real. A serious illness or death in the family, particularly of a parent and particularly if it was sudden or missed by doctors. A frightening symptom of your own that took months to resolve. A period of intense stress during which the body produced a great many strange sensations.
After that, the mind draws a reasonable conclusion — vigilance keeps you safe — and applies it permanently. The vigilance is the problem, not the original event.

How This Is Treated
- «Reducing checking and reassurance-seeking gradually, since these are what sustain the cycle
- «Learning to tolerate uncertainty, which is the real skill — certainty about health is not available to anyone
- «Understanding how anxiety itself generates physical symptoms, which accounts for a large share of what you are noticing
- «Loosening attention on the body, so ordinary sensations stop being detected and interpreted
- «Working on the underlying fear, which is frequently about death, or about leaving people unprotected, rather than about illness as such
- «Agreeing a sensible medical baseline with a doctor — real symptoms still get checked, on a schedule, not on demand

An Important Boundary
Health anxiety does not make you immune to illness, and no therapist should encourage you to ignore your body. The aim is a proportionate relationship with medical care, not the abandonment of it. New or persistent symptoms should be assessed by a doctor. What changes is the checking, the googling and the constant scanning — not sensible medical attention.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
What if I really am ill and therapy makes me ignore it?+
That is the fear that keeps most people from starting, and it is addressed directly. You will agree a reasonable plan with your doctor for how genuine symptoms get assessed. The work reduces compulsive checking, not appropriate care.
Why does a normal test result stop helping so quickly?+
Because the relief it produces reinforces checking. Each round of reassurance makes the next round of doubt arrive faster. That is why the treatment focuses on the checking rather than on providing more reassurance.
Is this the same as OCD?+
They overlap considerably, and health anxiety is sometimes treated as a form of OCD. The checking, the intrusive thoughts and the temporary relief all follow the same pattern. Treatment for both works on the same mechanism.
How long does it take?+
Often six to twelve sessions. The early part can feel harder before it feels easier, because reducing checking raises anxiety in the short term. That is expected and it is worked through gradually.
Can I be treated online?+
Yes. Health anxiety responds well to online work, and being in your own home makes the between-session practice more realistic.
