“Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi is an Australian-trained, AHHCA-certified counsellor with an MA in Counselling Psychology, certifications in pre-marital and marriage counselling, and more than twenty-five years of working with couples across India, Australia and the Indian diaspora. She trained at the Holistic Living Training Institute in Melbourne, lived in Australia for thirteen years, and now works online from New Delhi with couples across the United States.”
Couples come to her most often where cultural expectation is part of what they are negotiating — one partner Indian and one not, in-laws in India, a marriage under immigration strain — because she understands that context without needing it explained. But by no means only then: communication that has stopped working, the drift that follows small children, and rebuilding after a betrayal are ordinary couples work, and she does plenty of it. Sessions are by video, in English or Hindi, at a fixed weekly time in your evening.

Training and Credentials
Taanya holds an MA in Counselling Psychology and a BA (Hons) in Behavioural Sciences. Her Diploma in Holistic Healing and Counselling is from the Holistic Living Training Institute (HLTI) in Melbourne, an Australian-accredited course, and she is a certified member of the Australian Holistic Healers and Counsellors Association (AHHCA). She holds certificates in Pre-Marital Counselling and Marriage and Relationship Counselling, in Anger and Stress Management from the Australian Institute of Management, and is a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, NLP Life Coach and Usui Reiki Master. She still visits Australia and Dubai for training and workshops.

What Couples Bring
One partner Indian, one not, and two families operating on different assumptions about almost everything — how much parents are consulted, what a wedding is for, how money moves between generations, who is expected to be present at what. Most of the friction is not between the couple. It is between the couple and the negotiation they are constantly conducting on two fronts.
Couples separated by visa timelines, one partner waiting years on a status that will not resolve, decisions about children and property suspended indefinitely. This is a specific and heavy pressure and it is rarely acknowledged as a relationship issue in its own right.
In-laws in India whose involvement runs through daily calls and long visits. Disagreements about how much financial support flows home. The particular difficulty of a partner who has never had to set a boundary with their own parents learning to do it under pressure.
Communication that has stopped working, resentment that has accumulated without discharge, the drift that follows small children, mismatched expectations about intimacy, and rebuilding after a betrayal.

How the Work Goes
Sessions are typically weekly at first, fifty to sixty minutes, with both partners present. Some individual sessions may be useful alongside, particularly where one partner has something to work through that is theirs rather than the couple's.
The approach is practical rather than open-ended. Early sessions usually map the cycle — the specific sequence by which a small disagreement becomes the same argument you have had forty times — because most couples find that seeing the pattern reduces blame considerably on its own.
Couples usually need a slot when both partners are home and not exhausted. Because India is nine and a half to twelve and a half hours ahead of the continental US, a mid-morning Delhi appointment falls in the US evening, after dinner on the East Coast or late afternoon on the West Coast. Taanya keeps the same weekly time for each couple and tracks the daylight saving shifts herself.
A practical note on video: it is generally better for both partners to be in the same room on one screen than on separate devices, unless you are genuinely in different places. Two separate feeds tends to produce two parallel conversations with the practitioner rather than one between you.

Pre-Marital Work
A significant part of the practice, and worth considering before rather than after. Sessions cover the topics couples reliably avoid until they become problems: money and how it will be handled, children and timing, the role each family will play, religion and practice, career priority when the two conflict, and what each of you actually expects daily life to look like.
For couples marrying across cultures this is particularly worth doing, because a great many assumptions on both sides are invisible until they are contradicted. Taanya's pre-marital counselling certification and her own experience of living between India and Australia are both relevant here.

When Couples Work Is Not Appropriate
Worth stating clearly. Where there is abuse, coercive control, or where one partner is frightened of the other, joint sessions can be actively unsafe and are not appropriate. If that describes your situation, individual support is the right route. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.

How This Works from the United States
Sessions are held online by video from the practice at D-96 Anand Niketan, New Delhi. There is no US clinic or consulting room. In the United States the titles "therapist" and "counselor" and the LMFT designation are protected by each state, and marriage and family therapy with US residents normally requires a state licence; Taanya holds no US state licence and does not provide licensed marriage and family therapy. With American couples she works as a holistic relationship counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist rather than as a provider of licensed psychotherapy. She does not diagnose, does not prescribe medication, and cannot provide a court-recognised assessment — for any of those you need a provider licensed in your own state. Fees are paid privately and are not reimbursable through US health insurance. Sessions are scheduled, not on demand, so this is not a crisis service: if you are in the United States and in crisis, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at any hour, or call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
Can we do couples work if we are in different cities?+
Yes, and it is common among couples separated by work or immigration status. Each partner joins from their own location. Where you are in the same place, sharing one screen usually works better.
What are your qualifications for couples work?+
An MA in Counselling Psychology, certificates in Pre-Marital Counselling and Marriage and Relationship Counselling, an Australian-accredited holistic counselling diploma from HLTI Melbourne and AHHCA certified membership, with more than twenty-five years in practice. She holds no US state licence and works with US couples as a holistic relationship counsellor; see How This Works above.
My partner will not attend. Is it worth coming alone?+
Frequently, yes. The dynamic is interactional, so when one partner's responses change consistently the pattern cannot run as it did. A number of couples end up in joint sessions after one person started alone.
How many sessions do couples usually need?+
A focused issue often takes six to twelve. Longstanding patterns, or rebuilding after a betrayal, take considerably longer — recovery from infidelity is generally measured in many months rather than weeks.
Do you work with couples where only one partner is Indian?+
Yes, and it is one of the most common configurations. Much of the work is helping each partner see assumptions they did not know they were carrying, which is easier when someone understands both sides of the arrangement.
Can sessions be in Hindi?+
Yes. English or Hindi, or a mix, which is common where one partner is more comfortable in each. Where one partner does not speak Hindi, sessions run in English so that nobody is left out of the room.
