The Distinction
Self-confidence is domain-specific and evidence-based. It is your assessment of whether you can do a particular thing. It rises with practice and falls with inexperience, and it should — a confident surgeon is not confident about playing the sitar, and that is appropriate rather than a deficit.
Self-esteem is global and largely independent of evidence. It is your sense of whether you are acceptable as a person, worth care and attention, entitled to take up space. It does not respond to achievement in the way people expect, because it was not built from achievement in the first place.
This is why the combination that confuses everyone is so common: high confidence, low self-esteem. Someone who knows perfectly well that they are good at their job, and still believes that if people saw them properly they would not want them.

How to Tell Which One You Are Dealing With
A few reasonably reliable indicators:
- «If you can list your competencies accurately but feel a persistent sense of not being enough, that is a self-esteem question.
- «If praise makes you uncomfortable rather than pleased, that is self-esteem.
- «If you are fine until someone is displeased with you and then the whole self goes, that is self-esteem.
- «If you avoid a specific activity because you have not done it before, that is ordinary low confidence, and it responds to practice.
- «If success produces relief rather than satisfaction, that is self-esteem.
- «If you apologise for existing — for taking time, for asking a question, for being in the way — that is self-esteem.

Why Achievement Does Not Fix It
Because the two operate on different logic. Confidence accumulates evidence: you did the thing, therefore you can do the thing. Self-esteem does not accumulate, because the belief underneath it is not a claim about capability. It is a claim about worth, and it was usually formed before you had any capabilities to speak of.
This is why high achievers are so heavily represented among people with poor self-worth. The achievement was frequently the strategy — the attempt to earn something that cannot in fact be earned, because it was never withheld on the basis of performance to begin with. Each success buys a short reprieve and resets the requirement.

Where Low Self-Esteem Comes From
- «Conditional regard in childhood — affection that reliably tracked performance, behaviour or compliance.
- «Comparison as a parenting method. In Indian families this is often continuous and public, measured against siblings, cousins and the neighbours' children.
- «Criticism that addressed the person rather than the action. "That was careless" is survivable; "you are careless" becomes identity.
- «Emotional neglect, where a child concludes from the absence of response that their inner life is not of interest.
- «Being responsible for an adult's emotional state, which teaches that your role is to serve rather than to exist.
- «Sustained bullying or exclusion during adolescence, when identity is being formed.
- «A long relationship with someone who diminished you, which can erode adult self-esteem that was previously intact.

What Actually Builds It
Affirmations that contradict a deeply held belief tend to backfire — repeating that you are worthy while believing otherwise mostly rehearses the contradiction. Work that acknowledges the belief and examines where it came from goes considerably further than work that tries to overwrite it.
The internal critical voice rarely disappears. What changes is whether it is treated as a reporter of facts or as a familiar and unreliable commentator with an identifiable origin. Most people can, with attention, work out whose voice it actually is.
Waiting to feel worthy before behaving as though you were is the wrong order and it does not arrive. Setting a boundary, stating a preference, or declining something while still feeling undeserving is what generates the new evidence. The feeling follows the behaviour, generally by some months.
Almost everyone with low self-esteem applies a standard to themselves that they would consider obviously unfair applied to anyone else. Making that explicit — what would I say if a friend told me this — is a small intervention that does a surprising amount of work.
Where this formed early, insight alone often fails to move it, which is why people can understand their history thoroughly and still feel exactly the same. Inner child work and hypnotherapy are used precisely because the belief was formed below the level of argument.
- «Stop trying to argue with it
- «Change the relationship to the critic, not its volume
- «Act before you feel
- «Notice the double standard
- «Address the source, not only the symptom

Where Counselling Helps
Confidence problems are frequently solvable with structured practice and do not necessarily need therapy. Self-esteem is different, largely because it was formed in relationship and tends to shift in relationship.
A significant part of the mechanism is fairly simple: an extended experience of being taken seriously, without having to earn it in the session, contradicts the original belief more effectively than any technique. That is slow, and it is also why it tends to hold once it happens.

Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before booking your first session.
Can you have high self-esteem and low confidence?+
Yes, and it is a comfortable position to be in. Someone secure in their worth can be entirely relaxed about being a beginner, because being bad at something new says nothing about them. That combination is closer to the goal than high confidence with low self-worth.
Does low self-esteem cause depression?+
They are strongly associated and the relationship runs both ways — low self-worth is a risk factor for depression, and depression lowers self-esteem while present. If low mood has persisted for weeks, treating the depression usually needs to come first.
Do affirmations work?+
For people who already have moderate self-esteem, they can help. For those with genuinely low self-worth, research suggests they can make things worse, because the statement conflicts too sharply with the belief and mostly draws attention to the gap.
How long does it take to build self-esteem?+
Longer than most other therapeutic goals — usually months rather than weeks, because the belief is old and was reinforced for years. Most people notice behavioural change well before the feeling shifts, which is the normal order.
Is low self-esteem just modesty?+
No. Modesty is choosing not to advertise what you know about yourself. Low self-esteem is not having the underlying belief in the first place. Modest people can accept a compliment privately; people with low self-worth genuinely cannot.
