“Student counselling for school and college students aged roughly 14 to 25, in person at Anand Niketan in South Delhi and online, with Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi.”

Dr. (Hon.) Taanya Nagi holds an MA in Counselling Psychology and a Diploma in Holistic Healing & Counselling from the Holistic Living Training Institute in Melbourne, is a certified member of the Australian Holistic Healers & Counsellors Association (AHHCA), and practised in Australia for thirteen years before returning to India. She is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, NLP Life Coach and Reiki Master with more than twenty-five years of practice, and she works from a solo practice at D-96 Anand Niketan, New Delhi 110021, in person and online, in English, Hindi or Punjabi.

Students rarely come in about one thing. A drop in marks turns out to be a friendship falling apart; homesickness turns out to be pressure from home about a stream that was never really chosen. Counselling gives a student one place where the whole picture can be talked through without anyone grading it.

Counselling support for depression and anxiety

What students bring

  • «Exam anxiety: blanking in the hall, not sleeping in the weeks before boards or semester exams, and dread about results. The dedicated Exam Stress Counselling in South Delhi page covers exam-specific work in detail
  • «Stream and career choice: science, commerce or humanities after Class 10, which course after Class 12, and what to do when you have chosen something you now dislike. For structured career guidance, see the Career Counsellor in Delhi page
  • «Procrastination and focus, including the student who sits at the desk for six hours and studies for forty minutes of them
  • «Social anxiety: dreading class presentations, eating alone in the canteen, and finding a new college crowd hard to join
  • «Homesickness and loneliness for students who have moved to Delhi for college and are living in a hostel or PG for the first time
  • «Relationships and break-ups, friendships that turn hurtful, and the pressure of social media
  • «Family expectation: parents who have already decided the career, comparison with cousins or siblings, and the guilt of wanting something different

Students who have moved to Delhi

Every year thousands of students arrive from other states to study in Delhi and live in hostels or paying-guest rooms. The first months can be harder than anyone admits on the family call. The food is different, the city is large, the PG room is small, and the classmates seem to have known each other for years. Loneliness often shows up as irritability, oversleeping, skipped classes or endless scrolling rather than sadness. Talking to someone who is not a parent, a warden or a classmate helps, and sessions can be in Hindi or Punjabi as well as English for students who miss the language of home.

Confidentiality: what parents are told

Students need to know that what they say is private, otherwise they will not say it. For students aged 18 and over, sessions are confidential between the student and Taanya; parents are not told anything without the student's permission, even if a parent is paying or made the booking.

For students under 18, a parent or guardian is involved with consent from the start, because minors are seen with parental consent. In practice parents are usually told the general direction of the work, and details the student shares stay between the student and Taanya unless the student agrees otherwise. The exception, at any age, is safety: if there is a serious risk to the student or someone else, the people who need to know will be told, and the student will be told first that this is happening.

How sessions work

The first session is a conversation about what is going on, what the student wants to change, and what has already been tried. Students can come alone or, for younger students, with a parent for part of the first session. After that the work is practical: ways to handle anxiety before and during exams, ways to start work that has been avoided, ways to rehearse a difficult conversation with parents, and room to talk about the things that do not fit into a study plan.

Sessions can be arranged outside school and college hours, and online sessions mean a student in a hostel does not have to travel across the city. Online also works for students studying elsewhere in India or abroad who want a counsellor from home.

If you are in crisis

Student counselling is a scheduled service, not an emergency one, and it is not psychiatric or medical treatment. If you are thinking about ending your life or are in immediate danger, call Tele-MANAS on 14416, KIRAN on 1800-599-0019 or 112, or go to the nearest emergency department. Tele-MANAS takes calls in Hindi and English.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Do my parents need to know I am in counselling?+

If you are 18 or older, no; the decision to tell them is yours. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian needs to give consent, and what you say in sessions stays private except where there is a safety risk.

Is this only for exam stress?+

No. Exam stress is common, and it has its own page, Exam Stress Counselling in South Delhi. Student counselling also covers homesickness, relationships, focus, social anxiety, family pressure and choosing a direction.

Can you help me choose a stream or course?+

Yes, especially where the difficulty is emotional: fear of disappointing parents, confusion about what you actually want, or regret about a choice already made. For structured career guidance, the Career Counsellor in Delhi page describes that service.

I live in a PG and cannot travel easily. Can I do this online?+

Yes. Online sessions by video work well, and you only need a phone, earphones and a room where you will not be overheard.

Can sessions be in Hindi?+

Yes. Sessions can be in English, Hindi or Punjabi, and switching between them is normal.

My child is a student. Can I book for them?+

Yes, a parent can make the booking. For students under 18 you will be involved with consent; for students over 18 the sessions are confidential to them, and it works far better when the student wants to come.
