What Happens in Your First Counselling Session

The first session is the one people are most anxious about and know least about. A surprising number of people delay getting help for months largely because they cannot picture what will happen in the room.

Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

Before You Arrive

Before You Arrive

You do not need to prepare anything. You are not expected to arrive with a coherent account of your problem, a history, or a clear question. A great many people open with some version of I do not really know where to start, and that is a perfectly ordinary beginning.

The First Few Minutes

The First Few Minutes

Practical matters come first: confidentiality and its limits, how sessions work, length and frequency. This should be explained clearly rather than assumed — and if it is not, you are entitled to ask.

Confidentiality is worth understanding properly. What you say stays in the room, with the standard exceptions of serious risk to yourself or someone else, and legal requirements.

The Bulk of the Session

The Bulk of the Session

Mostly you talking and the counsellor listening and asking questions. They are building a picture — what brought you now rather than six months ago, how long this has been going on, what you have already tried, what your daily life and relationships look like, and what you would like to be different.

That last question matters more than it sounds. Many people have never articulated what better would actually look like, and the answer often shapes the whole course of the work.

What You Do Not Have to Do

What You Do Not Have to Do

You do not have to talk about anything you are not ready to discuss. Saying you would rather not go into something yet is a complete and acceptable answer, and a competent counsellor will simply note it and move on.

You do not have to cry, and you do not have to reach a revelation. Some first sessions are emotional; many are quite matter-of-fact.

How You Might Feel Afterwards

How You Might Feel Afterwards

Commonly lighter, sometimes tired, occasionally worse before better — particularly if you touched on something long avoided. Being drained after the first session is normal and is not a sign that it went badly.

Deciding Whether to Continue

Deciding Whether to Continue

At the end you should have some sense of whether this person is someone you could work with. Ask yourself whether you felt heard rather than assessed, and whether you could imagine being honest with them.

If the answer is no, changing counsellor is entirely reasonable and does not require justification. Fit predicts outcome more reliably than technique does.

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

What if I cry?+

Then you cry, and nothing about the session changes. It is among the most ordinary things that happens in a counselling room.

What if I have nothing to say?+

The counsellor's job includes asking the questions that help you find the words. Silence is also allowed and is often more useful than filling it.

Will I be told what to do?+

No. Counselling is not advice-giving. You may be offered perspectives, patterns you had not noticed, and practical techniques — but decisions about your life remain yours.

Can I bring someone with me?+

Ask beforehand. It is sometimes helpful for a first appointment, though most of the work is more effective one-to-one because people speak differently when someone close is present.
