Reiki is among the most widely practised energy healing methods in the world, and among the most vaguely described. People arrive at a first session with very little idea of what will happen, often having been sent by a friend who said only that it helped.

Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

What the Word Means

What the Word Means

Reiki is made of two Japanese words: rei, meaning universal or higher wisdom, and ki, meaning life force energy — the same concept as prana in Indian tradition and chi in Chinese. The system in general use today, Usui Shiki Ryoho, was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early twentieth century.

What Happens in a Session

What Happens in a Session

You lie down fully clothed on a treatment couch. Nothing is removed except shoes. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above a series of positions, moving through the body from head to feet, resting a few minutes at each.

A session usually runs around an hour. There is no massage, no manipulation, and no pressure applied. Many practitioners work with hands hovering rather than touching at all.

What It Feels Like

What It Feels Like

The most commonly reported sensations are warmth from the practitioner's hands, a tingling or pulsing, and deep relaxation. A significant number of people fall asleep. Some experience emotional release and find themselves tearful without a clear reason.

Others feel very little during the session and notice something over the following days — usually sleeping better or feeling less wound up. All of these are ordinary outcomes.

An Honest Word About Evidence

An Honest Word About Evidence

You are entitled to a straight answer here rather than a sales pitch. There is no scientific consensus that Reiki works through the transfer of an energy field, and the mechanism proposed by the tradition has not been demonstrated under controlled conditions.

What is better supported is that people report reduced anxiety and improved wellbeing after sessions. Whether that comes from the energy, from an hour of undisturbed rest and non-judgemental attention, or from expectation, is not something anyone can currently prove.

That distinction matters more for medical decisions than for wellbeing ones. As deep rest and emotional support, Reiki is safe and many people value it. As a treatment for disease, it is not a substitute for medical care and should never be presented as one.

What People Use It For

What People Use It For

Most commonly stress, sleep difficulty, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, grief, and recovery periods after illness or a difficult time. It is also used alongside conventional treatment as supportive care — which is different from using it instead.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Do I need to believe in it?+

No, and plenty of clients are sceptical. You are asked only to lie still and rest for an hour. Whatever else happens, an hour of undisturbed rest is not nothing.

Is there any physical contact?+

Light contact on non-intimate areas, or hands held just above the body. If you prefer no touch at all, say so — every competent practitioner will work without it.

Can Reiki replace medical treatment?+

No. Do not stop prescribed medication or decline medical treatment on the basis of energy healing. Any practitioner who suggests otherwise is behaving irresponsibly and should be avoided.

How many sessions do people have?+

Some come once at a difficult moment. Others attend periodically as maintenance. Where the work supports recovery from grief, burnout or illness, a short series is generally more useful than a single visit.
