Does Distance Reiki Work? An Honest Answer
It is a fair question, asked more often than practitioners admit, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a mystical deflection.

What Distance Reiki Is
Reiki is a practice in which the practitioner acts as a channel for energy directed toward the recipient's wellbeing. In a hands-on session the practitioner's hands rest on or near the body. In a distance session the same intention is directed without physical proximity, at an agreed time, using methods taught at Reiki's second level.
Within the tradition, distance work is not a modern concession to video calls. It is a formal part of the system, taught for decades before anyone had a webcam.

What People Reliably Report
Deep relaxation, frequently deeper than they expected. Falling asleep during the session, which is extremely common. Warmth or heaviness. A distinct drop in physical tension. Better sleep that night. A reduction in anxiety that persists for some days.
These reports are consistent across large numbers of people and across practitioners. They are worth taking seriously as reports.

What the Evidence Does and Does Not Show
Here is where honesty is required.
There is research on Reiki, mostly small studies with methodological limits, generally suggesting benefit for relaxation, anxiety and pain perception. There is no good evidence that Reiki treats or cures any disease. Distance Reiki specifically has been studied less, and results are mixed.
Sceptics attribute the reported effects to relaxation, attention, expectation and the placebo response. That is a reasonable position on the available evidence, and it is not one a practitioner should pretend does not exist.
What can be said with confidence: people consistently report feeling considerably better, and lying still for forty minutes with the explicit intention of being cared for is not a trivial intervention in a life that offers few such moments. Whether the mechanism is energetic or something else is not settled, and anyone claiming it is settled is overstating in one direction or the other.

What No Honest Practitioner Should Ever Claim
That Reiki cures cancer, or any other disease.
That you should delay, decline or stop medical treatment.
That it replaces medication, surgery or psychiatric care.
That failure to improve reflects insufficient belief or openness on your part — a claim that is both unfalsifiable and cruel.
That a specific number of sessions guarantees a specific outcome.
If a practitioner says any of these, leave. Real harm has been done to people who delayed treatment on this kind of advice, and it is the single strongest argument against the field.

Where It Genuinely Fits
Alongside medical care, never instead of it. During treatment or recovery, where the aim is rest and reduced distress rather than cure. Through grief. Across long stretches of stress that have left someone depleted. For sleep that has not been right for months. For anxiety that sits in the body rather than in identifiable worries.
Understood as a structured practice for deep rest and reduced distress, it does what it does reliably. Understood as medicine, it is being asked for something it cannot deliver.

Does Belief Matter?
Practitioners disagree. In practice, sceptical clients report effects at a rate that makes belief look less important than the tradition sometimes suggests.
What does matter is that you actually rest. A client who books a distance session and then answers email through it has not really taken part.

A Reasonable Way to Decide
Try it, with a clear idea of what you are testing. Do not stop anything medical. Notice how you sleep that night and how the following few days feel.
You are not obliged to adopt any belief system to find out whether it does something for you. If it does, that is worth knowing. If it does not, that is worth knowing too, and an honest practitioner will tell you when nothing seems to be happening rather than sell you a further course.
