Understanding Your Healing Journey

Treatment & Support

What People Come Here With

A great many people who arrive here would not describe themselves as having an eating disorder, and are not sure they are entitled to help. You do not need a diagnosis to deserve support.

  • «Constant mental arithmetic about food — calories, compensation, what is allowed today
  • «Bingeing, and the shame afterwards that makes the next binge more likely
  • «Eating in secret, or being unable to eat in front of others
  • «Rules that keep multiplying, and distress when a rule is broken
  • «Using restriction as the one thing that feels controllable when everything else does not
  • «A weight that is medically fine and a relationship with food that is not
  • «Years of dieting that has quietly become something else

The Indian Context

Eating difficulties here are frequently missed, partly because they do not match the picture people expect.

  • «Food is the primary language of care in most Indian families, so refusing it is read as rejection and eating becomes a social obligation
  • «Constant, casual commentary about weight from relatives, framed as concern
  • «Marriage-market pressure applied openly to young women about their appearance
  • «Fasting practices that provide socially approved cover for restriction
  • «The assumption that eating disorders affect thin, wealthy, Western girls, which delays recognition in everyone else
  • «Men, whose difficulties around food and body are very rarely named at all

What Counselling Addresses

Progress is generally not linear and relapse is part of recovery rather than evidence against it. You will not be weighed here, and you will not be given a meal plan — those belong with your medical team.

  • «What the behaviour is doing for you, which has to be understood before it can change — it is solving something
  • «The feelings underneath: anxiety, anger, powerlessness, grief, or a need for control somewhere
  • «The shame cycle, particularly with bingeing, where shame is the fuel rather than the consequence
  • «Body image, and the difference between changing a body and changing how you relate to it
  • «Family patterns around food, comment and control, which are often decades old
  • «Perfectionism, which sits underneath a large share of restrictive eating

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

Do I need a diagnosis to come?+

No. Many people have a difficult relationship with food that has never been diagnosed and still takes up an enormous amount of their life. That is worth addressing.

Will you make me eat differently, or weigh me?+

No. Weight monitoring and nutritional planning belong with a doctor and a dietitian. This work is on what sits underneath the behaviour.

What if I do not want to gain weight?+

That fear is understandable and it will not be dismissed or argued with. It is part of what gets worked on rather than a condition of being helped.

When do I need medical care rather than counselling?+

If you are purging, severely restricting, losing weight quickly, fainting, or have a heart rhythm concern, see a doctor now. Counselling alongside medical care is right; counselling instead of it is not, and you will be told so directly.

Is this confidential from my family?+

Yes, for adults. For a minor, some involvement of parents is usually necessary and would be discussed openly with you first.

Can this be done online?+

Yes, provided you are physically stable and have medical care in place where it is needed.
